BIG DATA: Diverse types of data collected from transactions, interactions, movement of people and objects.
As things become connected through the Internet-of-Things, even more data is being generated.
Individuals become increasingly worried about privacy, confidentiality, security and trust.
Some of us get so worried we start to withdraw digital visibility

Stop using google
1. Privacy, Confidentiality plus the ‘Shrinking Supply’ and 'Quality' of Data
We are building a human database where the data is owned by us.
Like your email, your HAT should contain data you would like to have that makes your life better.
A place to hold internet-of-things data
From your home, social media, your health data etc.
Owning your own data solves the privacy issues
Our own data can be viewed as a digital asset, it is valuable and useful to us in the way we lead our lives
Since we are using the data for ourselves, we will make sure it is as accurate as possible, solving the quality issue.
Today: Data belongs to those who collect it.
e.g. If purchases are made on an online supermarket, that data is owned by the supermarket.
Data also owned by whoever owns the technology that collected it. Reason: Without the technology, this data won’t even exist.
We currently have no access => we don't benefit from integrating it into our lives.
Even if data is returned to us, we may noy know what to do with it.
Data was to help the institution that collected it, not us. its vertical data, not horizontal data
Data gets 'noisy'.
i.e. unreliable information. 'quality' of data suffers
With the fears, we face the potential of 'shrinking supply' of data.
There is a threat of regulation, which could increase costs. This could lead to institutions become reluctant to invest in innovation
We don’t get more advanced technologies so this all ends badly for everyone.
Downward spiral: Less business opportunities, less innovation, less jobs.

2. ‘Worth’ and ‘Value’ of the Data
Data scientists are trying to predict us by putting the data on the inside, and the individual on the outside.
The human person can help in contextualising data, making it useful.
We don't just want smart things, we want 'smart us'.
Through a service dominant logic we develop a special kind of database.
A human schematic database
Organises vertical data according to the way we create value with products and services.
Use information to live our lives.
Individuals co-create that database with their own intelligence.
e.g. Temperature data from your smart home, by the car company, your office building, and the weather data outside will tell you 'what is the appropriate clothing for the temperatures you will encounter today?'.
Data read onto the HAT can be transformed into something useful for your decisions.
i.e. HAT transforms vertical-type data into horizontal-type data.

3. Creating a Market for Meaningful Data
When data is meaningful to us, it is not just of VALUE to us, it is now WORTH something,
Having all this data isn't useful if we can’t trade it or exchange it.
Have it surface in the economy so that GDP would grow.
Wealth and economy would grow.
More businesses and more jobs (multiplier effect).
The HAT is not just a database but also a multi-sided market platform.
Individuals can exchange certain data in exchange for services
e.g. Advice on our health, or pesonalised grocery bundles from our diet data.
This will create a market for personal data.
Important for the future growth of the digital economy
Helping institutions tailor what they offer in a way that is scalable.
For us, so that we can use our own data to make better decisions.
Not an easy project.
Behavioural scientists: needed to look at how behaviours change
Market economists: needed to understand the incentives on a platform
Design Engineers: designers for user experiences.
Ethnographers: needed to research how we use data in our lives.
The HAT team has all that capability.
We are working for both sides:
For institutions so that they can give us good advice and scalable personalised products
The HAT lets you as an individual acquire data.
Build your own repository of horizontal and meaningful data
Helps you make decisions (ie resourcce integration and contextualisation).
Lets you decide if you want to trade or exchange with firms for products and services.
When we create a horizontal platform that fits to human lives, we create the next stage of the internet; that of people and things.
New horizontal-type business and economic models that is human-centric will emerge.
Everyone should have a HAT of their own data, like the way we have emails or bank accounts.
The HAT will be ready in 2015
We expect the basic platform to be free

You can choose your own HAT trusted provider who could differentiate themselves by giving you additional services.
e.g. the way your email service, or your bank does.
We want to start a revolution to own, control and use our own data, for the good of the economy!

Vertical data needs to be re-organised and transformed in a 'horizontal’ way so that human beings can make better decisions from data.
The human person isn't a passive; data cannot tell the whole story.
They are more like an intelligent and adaptive sensor.
