A lot of controversial pieces
Message is important What is art? ART means different things to different people depiction of reality capturing of emotions Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth - Pablo Picasso A creation that carries a message or depicts a view of the world The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power
-Oxford dictionary Three criterion that make something art: 1. The intention of the artist Is there a reason for the art being the way it is? 2. The quality of the work Is the idea or the work itself good? 3. The response of the spectators Does the work create the wanted response? Meaning of the piece It's an "elephant" that people just drive by and over look Tachowa Covington has lived here for 7 years It's Banksy's comment on society People tend to overlook the big problem in this case, poverty Is it art? NO! There is clearly no skill involved in creating this piece . this is NOT art . . If I paint "hello" on the floor, it won't be art YES! The message is the most important thing If we look at van de Lagemaat's criterion... 1. The intention of the artist 2. The quality of the work 3. The response of the spectators Is there a reason for the art being the way it is? Is the idea or the work itself good? Does the work create the wanted response? CONCLUSION! Banksy's piece is in fact art.
Of course, it depends on the criterion you use to judge art, but for me, Banksy's art, is art because it has a clear and clever message.
