How to compare during your answer... The Opening of each of the texts: How does the opening of each of our texts reflect the theme?

let's go to our first text....The Lonesome West What will I write in each of my paragraphs? Opens with mischievous deceit; Coleman availing of his brother's poteen unbeknownst to Valene. Coleman urges Fr. Welsh to comply with this roguish behaviour by going along with the lie. The brothers' reactions to their neighbours is harsh yet they are not as candid in person and would rather speak ill of them

The Opening Scene The Other Texts Eilis is unaware that her sister and mother have arranged a meal with the parish priest. Even though plans are being made for Eilis's emigration, she has no active role in the process. This familial intervention by her sister and mother is done with loving intention Brooklyn which cannot be said for Coleman's actions in the play. Coleman uses deceit to gain something for himself. The Lacey
women work secretively to present a beneficial proposition to the youngest family member. The theme, although present in both texts, manifests itself very differently. ....and what is happening in I'm Not Scared??
...how do the other texts compare at this point? In terms of establishing the theme, the opening sequence of I'm Not Scared is a little deceiving due to the emphasis placed on the adventures of the children. It isn't until the children disband that the theme of appearance versus reality is bought to the fore. The theme, in my opinion, is presented in a shockingly sinister fashion when the trapped boy is discovered by an unsuspecting Michele. It is a gripping key moment that is full of peril and danger and since the music and camera close-ups work in tandem to ambush the reader it leaves us feeling overwhelmed. I'm Not Scared This same cannot be said for the other texts. While Eilish's story illustrates how being secretive and coy can potentially reap rewards for all involved, Salvatore's text shows a completely different perspective. The sibling rivalry exhibited in The lonesome West is harmless in comparison to the disturbing conditions in which Michele finds Filippo. •a further similarity was evident in… Some examples of comparative language... 2. Characterisation ...lets have a look at Brooklyn The second paragraph needs to explore how
the authors use characters to promote and maintain
the theme of Appearance v Reality in the texts. 2. Characterisation Cousins, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Kehoe are the epitome of our theme. Mrs. Kehoe, Eilis's Irish-American landlady had moments of benevolence especially when she gave Eilis the much sought after basement room and showed care and compassion when Eilis received news of her sister's death. The reader seems to be surprised later when we learn that Mrs. Kehoe divulged Eilis's recent marriage to Tony to Mrs. Kelly who used the information to humiliate Eilis. Brooklyn A similar surprise is found Girleen Kelleher has a secret. The Lonesome West is aptly titled since many of Mcdonagh's characters are indeed lonely. Her crush on Fr. Welsh is obvious from their meeting at the lake. Girleen's teasing and blunt remarks are, on the surface, unfair but the reality is that she has real affection for him. The awkward moment shared between both characters is indicative of the inappropriate nature of their connection. The reader is aware of how secrecy plays a major part in preserving the respect of Fr. Welsh and protecting the feeling of a love-struck teenager. In contrast to this, the movie presents us with a secretive Pino who for different reasons is keeping his involvement in the kidnapping a secret from Michele and his sister. There is much more at stake in this text as oppose to Girleen's romantic infatuation. Mirroring both of these examples , is that of Eilis's secret romance with Tony. Her instruction to Rose was not to let slip to their mother that she was in any relationship. Nowhere in her letters home did she reference Tony. Eilis's secret may have prevented her from getting close to her mother. Similarly, in I'm Not Scared, Pino's involvement with his gang members has stunted the natural growth of his father/son relationship with Michele. What did strike me from reflecting on the three characters Girleen, Pino and Eilis is that Eilis had fewer reasons to be so secretive. Out of each of the three texts the need to hold on to secrets probably affected Eilis the most. While Pino had been given a second chance and Girleen's young years may provide time for healing, Eilis has left home with the knowledge that her future is uncertain. Can we say that it's not only the dark, complicated secrets that need to be hidden? Do the owners of bright and uplifting secrets feel the need to hide them so as to avoid judgement and disapproval? Does pride come before a fall?
