My Family History.
by Charlie D'Amico
The Vietnam War

The Vietnam war was a war between north and south Vietnam started in 1954. South Vietnam's principle allies were the American forces. North Vietnam's principle allies were China and the Soviet Union. The North Vietnamese wanted to unite all of Vietnam under a single comunist regime wich is why their name for the war was "the war against the Americans to save the nation" or, the war against America, for short. The war raged on for 19 years before America withdrew all their troops in 1973. In 1975 south vietnam fell to a full scale invasion from the north vietnamese. In the end 2 million civilians where killed, and aproximatly 1.1 million vietnamese soldiers where killed. sadly the average age of the american soldier was 21.
Family Stories
One of my great uncle Ron's stories is about when he was first shipped out. He went into the head quarters building to find his cabin and his assignments and such. So he went up to the door and swung it open and a snake head popped out at him. He was so shocked he almost had a heart attack. Later on he figured out that it was a friendly snake named hooches and stayed in that building to eat all the mice. But the reason that it jumped out at him was, when others in his squadron came into the HQ building they would feed hooches scraps.
One of his more dramatic memories was about a flight were he was almost killed. So he was on a mission of some sort and in the briefing room he and his team were told about the surface-to-air missiles and what you had to do if one was shot at you. While he was out flying minding his own business he thought he saw something in his review mirror. he looked again saw a surface-to-air missiles. So he did what he was told to do. He went into a nose dive and waited for the missiles to fly over him. when he pulled out of the nose dive he saw the missiles blow up in front of him.
Thank yous
I would like to thank My great aunt Patty for taking the time to do this interview with me.
