Figurative Language
definition: compares two things using like or as.
definition: a short pithy saying in general use, stating general truth or piece of advice.

definition: a group of words estabilished by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of of the individual words.
ex: your barking up the wrong tree.
ex: my grandpa has a green thumb.
poem: boys will be boys does that make it okay to lie,cheat,and throw a women away?why can't girls be girls, because some are the same way.
definition: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
ex: he is a pig.
ex: the snow is a wet blanket.
poem: i am a fish gooey as an inside of a pumpkin i swim all around i blow bubbles in the ocean i can eat shrimp i can jump i am a fish.
meaning: this person loves water activities such as swimming.
ex: his face is as purple as a grape
ex: she is as ugly as a mule.
poem: as red as a ripe strawberry as loud as a baby screaming as fast as a racing horse is a fire truck.
meaning: this person loves fire trucks and is describing How the fire truck sirens contribute to the screaming baby.
ex: time is money.
EX: actions speak louder than words! :)
poem: take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risks.
this means that anything that is worth having you have to take a chance for it and earn it.
DEfinition: a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word.
Ex: i wondered why the baseball was getting big, then it hit me! ( haha this one is my favorite!)
ex: the spider got onto to the internet to check his web page.
poem: there's the absent minded professor he was a known fancy cross dresser male or female who knew he walked funny too leaving everyone a guesser
meaning: don't judge someone by their persona; Don't judge a book by its cover.
definition: the occurence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
ex: peter's piglet pranced priggishley.
ex: dan's dog dove deep in the dam , drinking dirty water as he dove.
poem: through three cheese trees, three free fleas flew, freezy breeze blew, freezy breeze made these three trees freeze, Freezy trees made these trees' cheese freeze. Thats what made these three free fleas sneeze!
definition: hyperbole is the use of exaggeration.
EX: it took my a billion years to do my homework.
EX: i'm a million times colder than Edward Cullen.
poem: Welcome to our restaurant where every thing is gigantic a hundred waiters hold one dish our kitchen can get frantic our soupis deeper than the sea our noodles stretch a mile our bread is longer than a train it's sure to make you smile we pile our up mountain high one cookie hides the moon we pour our iced tea into boats we hope you visit soon.

meaning: this person is persuading you to come to his restaurant.
definition: giving human like qualities to things such as tree's,flowers etc.
ex: the wind whispered through the air.
ex: the sun peeked through the blinds.
poem: the teapot sang as the water boiled, the icecubes cackled in their glass, the teacups chattered to one another, while the chairs were passing gas, the gravy gurgled merrily, as the oil danced in the pan, oh my dinnertime chorus, what a lovely lovely clan!
meaning: it is taking dinner objects and using human traits and giving them to the kitchen utensils! And by all of the sounds, combined they make a chorus of music!
