There's More to Them Than you Realize

Action Verbs
An action verb tells what action the subject of the sentence is performing.
Verb Phrase
A verb phrase is a main verb plus one or more helping verbs.
Linking Verbs
A linking verb links the subject with
another word in the sentence.
The verb To Be
The forms of the verb to be are not always linking verbs.
Additional Linking Verbs
appear feel look seem
sound taste become grow
remain smell stay turn
Helping Verbs
Be
- am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
Have
- has, have, had
Do
- do, does, did
Other helping verbs
- may, might, must, can, could, shall, should, will, would
Examples
1) A new witness
has come
forward.

2) The suspect now under arrest
may
never
have been
near the crime scene.

3) That car
does
not
corner
very well.

* Was is linking work with complex.

* was is not used as a linking verb
