Transcript of DIVERGENT

By: Veronica Roth

5 Symbols
Divergent takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. It first starts in Tris's origin faction, Abnegation. Then for the rest of the story it takes place in the Dauntless compound. The Abnegation sector is very plain and dull. All the houses are the same outside and in. The Dauntless compound however, is very wild and active with energy. The Dauntless compound is underground letting very little light through. The chasm is a pathway with an underground river running through it. It is said to be damp and cold throughout the hallways from the chasm and the hallways echo. The pathways above the chasm does not have railings, this is to show that there is a fine line between bravery and idiocy. Some other places that take place in the book are, the pit, the training room, the tattoo parlor and many more.
Beatrice Prior
There are many themes in Divergent such as overcoming fear and having faith in family. The book really shows how fear is in everyone and how we need to deal with it. It also reminds us that we cannot be fearless and so we have to learn how to control our fears. By doing so we become stronger mentally and psychically. Family is another point because throughout the book Tris's family helps her in many ways. She also learns that even though her family is separated they still love each other unconditionally even to where as they are willing to make sacrifices for one another.
Beating Heart By: Ellie Goulding
Eyes make their peace in difficulties
With wounded lips and salted cheeks
And finally we step to leave
To the departure lounge of disbelief

And I don't know where I'm going
But I know it's gonna be a long time
And I'll be leaving in the morning
Come the white wine bitter sunlight

Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
Before the bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left, hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time
Before daylight

In the canyon underneath the trees
Behind the dark sky, you looked at me
I fell for you like autumn leaves
Never faded, evergreen

And I don't know where I'm going
But I know it's gonna be a long time
'Cause I'll be leaving in the morning
Come the white wine bitter sunlight

Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
Before the bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left, hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time

I can't face this now everything has changed
I just wanna be by your side, here's hoping we collide
Here's hoping we collide
Here's hoping we collide

Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
Before the bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left, hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time
Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
I chose this song because it really describes how Tris is feeling throughout the book. The first verse describes when Tris decides to leave her faction and go through the brutal Dauntless initiation. The second verse represents how she started to trust Tobias and later ending up falling for him and starting a relationship. The last verse describes how she and Tobias start to develop a deeper relationship with more trust. And lastly, the chorus portrays how Tris doesn't know whats coming next and how she needs to cherish each moment she spends with her loved ones.

Beatrice Prior is 16 years old. In the book, she describes herself as having blonde hair, gray-blue eyes and a small figure. She also has 3 ravens tattooed on her collarbone. Beatrice also changes her name to Tris when she first starts dauntless initiation. The story is told from Tris's POV and how she struggles with going through initiation and hiding her Divergence. During her time in Dauntless, Tris develops feelings for her instructor, Four. Through the book Tris has made many friends and enimies. Some of her friends are Christina, Will and Al. Later her and Four start a relationship and she finds out he is also Divergent and that his real name is Tobias Eaton. Tobias tells Tris that the Erudite are planning to overthrow Abnegation by putting the Dauntless under a simulation to attack the Abnegation. Both Tris and Tobias have to find a way to stop this.
Jeanine Matthews
Jeanine Matthews is the leader of Erudite mostly because she is very intelligent. She creates rumors about the Abnegation so she can convince others that Abnegation should not be the governing faction, and Erudite should. Jeanine has gray eyes, blonde hair and glasses. Another reason she wants to overthrow Abnegation is because she believes that their faction is keeping Divergents hidden for safety and she wants all the Divergents dead. Jeanine creates a serum which she injects the Dauntless with so she can control them and use them to kill the Abnegation. This serum does not affect the Divergent so if there are any Divergents in Dauntless, she can kill them too.

Text to world
A good example of factions in today's society is government. Each party is separated into groups which have different ideas of how to run the government. Some examples are liberals, conservatives, N.D.P etc. This is like how each faction in Divergent values different things which leads to valuing different things in government. It also leads to some disagreements and conflict with one another or even trying to overthrow the party in lead, just like Erudite.
Text to text
Divergent reminds me of another series called The Hunger Games. They both have a 16 year old feminine main character who in someway is seen as a leader. They both also have their cities divided in sections such as "factions" or "districts". They both also take place in a dystopian version of a city. Also, most of their main goal is to stop the government or the person dictating it. Even though these books have many similarities, they have their own independent plot and goal.

Text to self
Tris and I do not have many things in common as far as appearance. Tris has blond hair and gray-blue eyes. She is also very small for her age. I have brown eyes and hair and I am also not very small for my age. Tris and I are both very stubborn and curious.
We both also have temper which can be bad in certain situations. Overall, Tris and I have more in common personality wise rather than from psychical appearance
Veronica Roth was born in New York on August 19, 1988. She is the youngest of 3 children and was raised in Barrington, Illinois where her mother now resides. Veronicas parents were divorced when she was only 5 years of age and her mother is now remarried to Frank Ross. Veronica graduated from Barrington high school. After, she attended Carleton College then transferred to Northwestern University for a creative writing program. Later she married a photographer named Nelson Fitch in 2011. They now live in Chicago. Veronica first started writing Divergent on winter break in her senior year at Northwestern University. Divergent was a big success and her career took off. Veronica wrote 2 more books following Divergent in 2012 and 2013 called Insurgent and Allegiant. In 2014 a film on Divergent was released. She also published another book in 2014 called Four which is from Tobias Eatons, Tris's love interest, perspective in Divergent.

The second symbol I chose was the symbol for Dauntless. This is Tris's refuge faction and the faction she chose at the choosing ceremony. In the book Tris has always admired the Dauntless and when she found out she had a aptitude for it, she knew that was going to be her choice. It was also the only place she felt would be safe to hide her Divergence, but it turns against her. In Dauntless, Tris also finds out more about herself and what she is capable of doing. Tris transforms into a whole new person at Dauntless.

The fourth symbol I chose was the Erudite symbol. This is when Tris and Tobias find out Erudites plan to overthrow Abnegation. Jeanine uses the Dauntless to fight for her by putting them under a simulation. The simulation does not affect the Divergent so Tris and Tobias have to find out a way to stop the simulation and save the Abnegation before all of them die.

The last symbol I chose is the Candor symbol. The Candor value honesty and Tris wants to still doesnt know why Jeanine was so bloodthirsty to kill the Abnegation and Divergent. Tris is also unsure about what will happen next. Will there be more war? Or will there lives finally be at peace, but their city corrupt.

The first symbol I chose was the symbol of Abnegation. The reason I chose this is because this is the faction Tris originally comes from and where her mother and father live. At the beginning, Tris is questioning herself about whether she should stay in Abnegation or not. This is because she is not selfless enough and she is always doing something wrong or not well enough. She also does not want to leave her family behind and she still sees how she could live a life in Abnegation. Tris is scared for what the test will tell her and what she will choose.

The third symbol I have chosen is the Amity symbol. Since Amity's faction is about peace and harmony, I thought this represented how Tris felt during initiation. Despite all the fighting and fear simulations Tris has made many friends such as Christina, Will, Uriah, Marlene, Lynn, and Al. Tris also has made many memories such as getting her first tattoo, and finding her first love.

In a futuristic city where people are divided into 5 factions, Abnegation, the selfless, Amity, the peaceful, Candor, the honest, Dauntless, the brave, and Erudite, the Intelligent. When teenagers turn 16 they have to take a test to determine which faction they belong to. The test tells you what faction is best suited for you based on your personality, but you are still free to chose what faction you want. This means either stay with your family or peruse a new life in another faction. Beatrice Prior, the main character in this story, doesn't feel like she belongs in Abnegation, but she does not want to leave her family. After she takes the test she finds out that she has a result for more than one faction. She is Divergent. Divergents are dangerous because they do not fit in any group and they threaten society. Beatrice then has to make a decision if she wants to leave her loved ones behind or chose another faction for her safety.
