file system - NTFS MFT - structure TEst1 introduction NTFS -> New Technology File System
proprietary file system by Microsoft
available since Windows NT 3.1 (1993) security MFT content:
affinity of blocks and files
access permissions
all data informations = attributes (name, date, content, ...)
using about 12,5% of the disc space
manually adjustable by a factor from 1 till 4
smaller files are stored directly in the MFT Reasons for development:
eliminate disadvantages of FAT (max. filesize)
better access rights
enhanced data security selective access-file-level protection by ACL (Access-Control-List)
enhanced data security by metadata-journaling
compression or encryption on file-level
either files, directories or complete volumes
only sensefull for larger files
DESX (since Win 2000)
Triple DES (since Win XP)
AES (since Win XP Service Pack 1 and Win Server 2003)
EFS (since NTFS3 (Win 2000 /Win XP Professional)) parameters cluster size of 4KB for files larger than 2GB
maximum disc space: 2^64 Cluster - 1 Cluster
available disc space depending on operating system
maximum files: 2^32 - 1 file
file name length up to 255 characters
information structure of a file: security descriptor standartinformation file or directory name data or index summary advantages: multi-user file system, allows highly differentiated access rights by access control lists for users, groups, processes
efficient memory usage at partitions over 400 MB
file-system-level encryption with EFS
backward compatible disadvantages: exact function is a trade secret of Microsoft
NTFS requires a Windows NT based operating system
Linux can cause serious damage on the file system!!!
incompatible to DOS, Windows 95/98/ME — and products of other manufactures
limited upward compatibility
either compression or encryption
