The Influence of Television on Culture Pamela Hicks Positive Front Effects Negative Back Effects Learning Strategy Television is one of the greatest ways to learn something new. Thanks to shows and channels such as Animal Planet and Discovery Channel, millions of people are able to learn new things about nature and the world around us they may not have known before. Children are also able to learn about their favorite animals and they can also be educated through shows on Nick Jr. like Dora the Explorer (who teaches Spanish). http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/Animal_Planet News Watching the World News keeps us informed about the important matters that are going on in other countries. There is also our local news that keeps us up-to-date about issues in our county as well as the state of Florida. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/abcs-world-news-with-diane-sawyer-debuts_b26060 Family Entertainment Watching shows on the weekends with my family is something that we do often. Television gives us time to enjoy a great movie or show together after a long week of school or work. Inappropriate Content Shows like wrestling can have negative effects on a person. With all the violence shown on the show and on other shows as well, it can bring violence into a culture. Just as in the video of Bhutan, children can learn bad habits of hitting and fighting each other, thinking that it is fun or that it is just a game. It can teach children and others wrong ways of treating others. http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/professional-wrestling/images/745941/title/wrestlemania-xxiv-wallpaper Distraction With watching television, sometimes people may be so focused on what they are watching, that they forget about the important things. I know for me, when I watch a show, I forget that I have chores to finish. Sometimes watching television can be too much. Bad Health Sitting on the couch, all day, watching television can lead to health issues later on in life. Instead of exercising and using our muscles, many choose to sit down and watch shows instead. It is always good to take a break from the television and just take a step outside to enjoy the fresh air for a while. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/children_shealth/9475493/The-couch-potato-children-who-cannot-throw-or-catch.html
