#### Transcript of Hypothesis

What makes a good hypothesis?
Hypothesis
Has to:
Be testable
Show a relationship between 2 things (State Independent and Dependent Variables)
Include a prediction
Include an explanation
A hypothesis is an

educated explanation

and is also

statement.
I think my plant with fertilizer will grow fast with more fertilizer.
Use the example below, and type in yes or no next to each question.

-Is a statement.

-Does
not
state the
variables
testing

-Is testable.

-Does
not
include an
explanation

To include all this information, a hypothesis needs to be in a certain format!
**
This is the format you will be using all year for your hypotheses.
If

______________

is related to

__________

then,

(state a prediction)
because

(followed by an explanation.)

What are the
variables
we can test?

Now put it in the correct format: Include a
prediction
and
explanation.

Hypothesis to work from:
I think my plant with fertilizer will grow faster with more fertilizer.
Starting with a
variables
to test, followed by
prediction
and
explanation.

**Make sure your first part starts with:
If

_____

is related to

______

then,

_______
because _____.
What would be the scientific question?:

What are the
variables
?
Example # 1:
How does the salt content of soil affect the height of bean plants?
If

salt content in the soil

is related to
the height of the bean plant
then,
__________________
because
___________________.
then,
plants grown in soil with 20% salt will be the smallest
because sodium reduces the ability of plants to get water from the soil.
Prediction

followed by

Explanation.
If
salt content in the soil

is related to

the height of the bean plant

then,

plants grown in soil with 20% salt will be the smallest

because
sodium reduces the ability of plants to get water from the soil.
Full Hypothesis:

If

____

is related to

____

explanation.

What are the
variables
?

**Remember after you find the
variables
,
put it in the statement:

"If

____

is related to
____

then,"
Example # 3... Challenge
then,

Prediction

because

explanation.
If

the temperature of water

is related to

how much sugar dissolves

then,

the warmer the water the more sugar will dissolve

because
the molecules are moving faster in hotter water and the collusion of the water and sugar is greater.
Example 3 Challenge:
(IV): Amount of fertilizer
(DV): How fast the plants grow
Variables:
If

the amount of fertilizer

is related to
how fast plants grow

then,
fertilized plants will grow faster
because
there will be more nutrients in the soil
.

How does the amount of fertilizer affect how fast the plant grows?
Possible Scientific Question:
Now write your prediction and explanation:

Scientific Question: How does the amount of sun exposure affect how quickly the tomato plant grows?

Example # 2
Variables:

Hypothesis:
Variables:
IV: The amount of sun exposure

DV: How quickly the tomato plant grows
Full Hypothesis:
If

the amount of sun exposure

is related to
how quickly the tomato plant grows

then,

the tomato plant with the most sun exposure (75%) will grow the fastest

because

the sun provides energy for the tomato plant.

Variables and proper format:
Variables...
IV: Salt content in the soil
DV: Height of bean plant
Now put variables in the format...
The experiment will put 0%, 10%, or 20% of salt in soil to test the height of the bean plants.
Which plant will grow the smallest with 0%, 10%, or 20% of salt in soil?
Explain why you predict this...
How does the temperature of water affect the amount of sugar that dissolves?
Experiment: Tomato Plants with 0%, 25%, and 75% sun exposure
