due to the growth of technology, and when electronic wasted is
disposed of, it is taken to Third World countries, so it is not the
United States problem. However, Electronic waste is a big
problem in China because most of the world sends the E-waste
there; Therefore, countries need to come up with a way to
recycle E-waste because there are many hazardous materials
damaging people in these Third World areas.
By: Maxwell Steiner Definition: Electronic waste, E-waste, is used to describe old, end-of-life or discarded appliances using electricity. Discarded computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, television sets and refrigerators can be considered E-waste.
Facts about E-Waste Global e-waste generation is growing by about 40 million tons a year E-waste represents 2% of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70% of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys. Recycling can be a good way to reuse the raw materials in a product, the hazardous chemicals in e-waste means that electronics can harm the workers in the recycling yards and can damage the environment. The City of Guiyu, China According to reports from Shantou University, Guiyu has the highest level of cancer-causing dioxins in the world and an elevated rate of miscarriages. Guiyu, China is nicknamed the electronic graveyard. Guiyu began receiving e-waste in 1995. The United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea are the main countries to blame for sending to Guiyu Roughly one million tons of e-waste is sent here per year. Health reports from the region say that Guiyu's children suffer from an extremely high rate of lead poisoning.
