Transcript of Pocahontas - Disney vs Reality

By Monique, Maddy and Abbie Pocahontas 1995 How Disney Sees It What Actually Happened? That is the story that people, especially children all over the world know. The Real Story In 1607 the English settled a colony at Jamestown, Virginia. The settlers found the harsh winters were more difficult then they thought it would be. They soon found that their supplies were becoming dangerously low. Then one day during 1608, Native Americans captured Captain John Smith and some of his men. They were captured while out searching for food. Captain John Smith's men were all killed and he was taken to the Chief Powhatan. The powerful Indian Chief ordered them to killed Captain John Smith. Then at the last moment the Chief's daughter, 13 year old Pocahontas asked her father to saved Captain John Smiths life. Not quite what we remember? Disney often uses romance and action to make
history more exciting, especially for younger
viewers who are their target audience.
In the 1995 film Pocahontas, we can see many
things out of place.
These things are called anachronisms. What is an anachronism? Noun.
A thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, esp. a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned.
An act of attributing a custom, event, or object to a period to which it does not belong. But what actually happened? google definition* Disney tells us... Pocahontas is a young woman who is a princess in her tribe as her father is the chief of the tribe. Powhatan is the tribe that she had been born and raised in which is based on the New England side of America, Jamestown, Virginia.
She is asked to marry a member from the tribe named Kocoum. Pocahontas does not want to marry him.
Pocahontas finds John Smith. John Smith is an English captain on board a ship that has settled in her area of New England.
Pocahontas falls in love with John Smith and they kiss.
Kocoum had approached them kissing each other, Kocoum attacks Smith and kills Thomas one of the men/friend of Smith.
Pocahontas saves John life but he is shot by the governor Ratcliffe and has been sent back to England. Thank you ! You will receive a handout with a
brief summary of the information
