Catacombs
Lived a life full of "hardships"
- abandoned by father
- mother died young
- unsuccessful relationships
- gambling debts
- brother dies of TB
- young wife dies of TB
- alcoholism
Considered the father of the "Detective Story." Wrote poetry, short stories, novels, and was a lit critic.
As a result many of his stories are very macabre. Moreover, Poe is known for creating characters where their "sanity" is in question.
