Transcript of Space Race Achievements

By: Mithusha, Zaina, Nazm, Jaida and Ashley What happened? Why did it happen? When did it happen? The space race took place in many places usually depending on what country built what probe. For example during a conference about the IGY (International Geophysical Year) held in Washington D.C, the sputnik was launched in Russia because it was created by Russian scientists and engineers. Telescopes gave valuable information but the space race gave scientist and astronauts a new experience by landing on objects in space. Scientist want to go further into other bodies of our solar system. The space race began on 1957 when the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 1, the first ever artificial satellite. Another main reason why the space race started is because since Russia created and launched the Sputnik 1 Americans had to do something to "beat" the Russians in the space exploration. The most important people in the space race would be the scientist and the engineers because they built and launched the probes. For example the Sputnik was created by a group of Soviet scientist and engineers led by Sergei Korolev who was a rocket engineer and spacecraft designer. Another important person would be the astronauts. In this case the astronaut, Yuri Gagarin was the first to be launched into outer space. His spacecraft, the Swallow made one orbit of the Earth in 89min. In 3 hours after orbit, he landed back on Earth. The space race happened because scientist and astronauts want to know more about our solar system. They have launched other probes such as the Sputnik and the Apollo on the surface of the Moon. There is also the Venera which landed on the surface of Venus only for a few seconds before it malfunctioned due to extreme conditions on the planet. The space race started on 1957 when Russians launched the Sputnik. On 1978 a probe called the Pioneer Venus was used to radar and map over 90% of the surface of Venus. The Viking was the first ever probe to land on Mars. The Viking project was a success because it gave scientist valuable data about the surface for several years. It also sent over 4000 pictures for scientist and contributed a large amount of information about the soil and surface conditions. An estimated guess of when they launched the Viking is around 1975.
