The IRS Data Retrieval Tool
This process will help you complete the FAFSA more accurately and help avoid unnecessary delays in being awarded financial aid.
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is available for online FAFSA submission at www.fafsa.gov. The DRT allows FAFSA applicants and parents the ability to transfer their income information from the IRS to the FAFSA.
On www.FAFSA.gov click "Start A New FAFSA"
After being asked a series of other questions you will get to the Financial Information Section. Under this section, you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not you (or your parents) are eligible to use the tool.
If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will be prompted to enter your PIN number and then "Link to IRS".
For the 2015-16 academic year, all FAFSA applicants and parents who indicate they have filed/will file a 2014 tax return will be directed to use the IRS DRT to report their income information on the FAFSA. This step is not required but will help eliminate incorrect information being submitted on the FAFSA as well as prevent delays.
Once you are connected to the IRS.gov site, you will have to enter in your (or your parent's) filing status and address. Please keep in mind the address needs to be entered in exactly as it was reported to the IRS on tax return. If it accepts that information, you will need review your information for accuracy, select the appropriate box at the bottom, and select "Transfer Now".
You will then be returned to the FAFSA website to complete the remainder of your FAFSA. You successfully transferred your income information!
Please remember that Chadron State College’s FAFSA priority deadline is June 1.
