Transcript of The Hunger Games Presentation

Summary Written by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games is about sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in what was once North America, but is now Panem. Every year the Capitol hosts the Hunger Games, where one male and female tribute aged 12-18 from each district are chosen to fight to the death on a televised event; Katniss ends up volunteering as tribute for her district when her younger sister is chosen at the reaping. Katniss and her fellow tribute form her district, Peeta Mellark, are taken to the Capitol to train for the games. Katniss is one of 24 total tributes that will try to be the only surviver and winner of the Hunger Games. Main Conflict man v. man Katniss is forced to fight for her life in the Hunger Games against 23 other tributes and there can only be one winner. man v. society Katniss has harsh feelings toward the Capitol because they enjoy many luxuries while all the othe Districts nust work. Also, she has hatred toward them because of how hundreds of children have died in the yearly Hunger Games and she wants to defy the Capitol Theme Power In this book, Panem has a totalitarian government the is ruled by the Capitol who forces teens to kill one another in the Hunger Games as a way to prevent rebellion. Sacrifice Katniss makes a personal sacrifice for her family to save her sister, Prim, and also at the end of the book when she and Peeta attempt suicide to show the Capitol the meaning of a human life. Tone The author's tone of The Hunger Games is dark. This decribes how Suzanne Collins writes about how Katniss feels while in the arena because the games are dangerous and the teenage tributes are there to fight to the death. Character Sketches Katniss Everdeen Determined Provider "It was slow-going at first, but I was determined to feed us. I stole eggs from nests, caught fish in nets, sometimes managed to shoot a squirrel or rabbit for stew, and gathered the various plants that sprung up beneath my feet. Plants are tricky. Many are edible, but one false mouthful and you're dead. I checked and double-checked the plants I harvested with my father's pictures. I kept us alive." "she's a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim." Sentimental Peeta Mellark Strong Humorous Open Katniss - “What about you? I’ve seen you in the market. You can lift hundred pound bags of flour,” I snap at him. “Tell him that. That’s not nothing.”

Peeta - “Yes, and I’m sure the arena will be full of bags of flour for me to chuck at people.”
“So, here’s what you do. You win, you go home. She can’t turn you down then, eh?” says Caesar encouragingly.
“I don’t think it’s going to work out. Winning . . . won’t help in my case,” says Peeta.
“Why ever not?” says Caesar, mystified.
Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. “Because… because… she came here with me.”
