Geographical Location of hazard Case Study of Hazard Social Impacts An avalanche is when a mass of snow, ice or rocks falls down a mountainside. So an avalanche is when snow, ice or rocks fall down a take everything down with it. An avalanche occurred in Galtur, Austria and it swept everything with it and killed 31 people. Latitude of Galtur - 46.9667° N, 10.1833° E Galtur is very famous for its ski resort.

31 people died in the avalanche.
57 people were buried under the snow.
26 people were rescued out of the 57 people.
It took the avalanche 1 minute to reach Galtur.
It was 50m high. It traveled at 290km/h.

The ski resort shut down costing the industry
$7,694,100 each day it was closed for.
31 people died
Roads were damaged
The whole town was buried under the snow.
Loss of infrastructure jobs lost. When did the Galtur, Austria Avalanche occur? 23rd February 1999 Avalanches occur mostly in winter. Avalanches occur when there is a soft platform of snow
and then the snow falls and that creates an avalanche. What has been done to reduce the negative impacts of the disaster? What should have been done? What could be done differently in the future? Trees fell over and ruined the road.
Ice melted down and that could cause floods.
Tons of snow was deposited about 170 000.
The avalanche caused slope instability. 31 people died because of this avalanche.
People lost their homes.
Houses were damaged.
Cars were completely filled over.
Personal things lost like photo albums, family presents, family heirlooms and pets.
Interruptions of daily life. There are three zones of avalanches:
red zone - high risk avalanche. This means that this place is very dangerous for an avalanche.
yellow zone - medium risk. This is not potentially dangerous.
green zone - avalanche safe. This place is safe and the avalanche will not ruin it.
The people are trying to improved Galtur, Austria and are trying to make the place a green zone place so if an avalanche does occur again they will be safe. The people should build a fence at the slope. The people should have made Galtur a green zone place so they will be safe. They should build fences or nets for safety. Solutions for a better place are:
-Revegetation - planting trees.
-Snow fences - building fences to keep the avalanche away
-Snow nets - building a snow net so when the slope falls the net catches it
-Disrupting the snow pack - making sure the slope does not fall
