students should be explicitly involved in understanding and clarifying the goals of instruction and setting personal goals for their own learning. This can be accomplished by sharing the learning outcomes with students and asking them what they think they know about a particular topic or what they can already do relative to particular skill.
students need to be encouraged to determine where they are at any given point relative to their thinking and to the learning goal. Students can be taught strategies that support them in making their thinking and learning visible so that they can examine it.
Finally, teachers must provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning. Reflection is key in supporting self-directed learners.
