THE DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH
What is the point of description?
Why do we describe things?

What are sensory details?

Let us take a look:
What is the detail in this scene?
1. What did you see?
2. What did you hear?
3. What did you smell?
4. What did you taste?
5. What did you feel?
Lesson Objectives:
Sensory details are details like sights,
sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings that
a writer uses to create vivid images
(visualization) in a reader's mind.

21st century sensory details are experienced from television, music DVDs, movies, and our everyday interactions with people. Ask: Did something grab your attention recently? What was it that made such a lasting, vivid, and memorable impression upon you?
What is the detail in this scene?
What are the sensory details? What did you see? What did you hear? What did you smell? What did you taste? What did you feel?
So what do sensory details have to do with writing? If we are able to recognize sensory details in a selected text, we are able to better understand, to comprehend, and visualize the text. For example:

"Franklin rushed out the door as he headed for tennis practice. He slung his tennis bag over his shoulder and hopped into Mary's car."

Question: Can we really understand, comprehend, or visualize what Franklin is feeling as a person or character? No!
Let us add what Franklin may feel and hear:
"The chill of the wind froze him to the bone as his feet crunched on the ice under his feet."

This now tells us that it may be winter, that Franklin is cold because the wind is blowing in his face, and that he can't walk as fast as he would like due to the ice on the ground.

Let us add what Franklin may smell and taste:
"As the sanitation engineers collected the garbage, Franklin got a whiff of the left over, raw, turkey neck as an old napkin blew in his
mouth.
This now tells us that there was a strong, unpleasant odor in the air, that Franklin smelled raw and spoiled turkey neck, and that Franklin had a nasty taste in his mouth because a napkin from the garbage blew in his mouth.
Now it is your turn: Please turn the below passage into a descriptive paragraph by adding all the sensory details. You can add what you want.
"On Wednesday, Jane went to the Jingle Ball Concert. Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Lenny Kravitz, and Adele performed. Many people were there, and Jane did not know anyone. Jane sat in her seat, and at times, she lifted herself up to bop to the music. The concert was very, very long. Jane had homework left to do. Jane decided not to do her homework, but stay at the concert."
In summary, sensory details are what?

-details that a writer uses in a text

-details like sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings

-details that help create vivid (visualize) images in the mind of the reader

-help the reader understand and comprehend the text better
