THANKS
FOR
WATCHING! Nikki Giovanni Winter Poem
once a snowflake fell
on my brow and I loved
it so much I kissed
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and my brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
I reached to love them all
and I squeezed them and they became
a spring rain and I stood perfectly
still and was a flower
-- Nikki Giovanni (b. 1943) This poem makes me feel happy and comforted because Giovanni is saying she feels happy when the snow "blankets" her. But I also felt a bit of lonesomeness when Giovanni was still because she didn't have any company. Giovanni used a lot of imagery when she was describing how the snow was falling and what it was doing while it was falling. Alliteration- is the repetition
of the first letter or sound in
the word Personification- Giving non-human like things (animals, objects) human-like characteristics Figurative Language Nikki Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 7, 1943. Nikki grew up in Cincinnati area visiting her family in Knoxville. Nikki first got the attention of the public in late 1960's at the Black Arts Movement. After she graduated from Fisk University in 1967, she created the first Black arts festival in Cincinnati. By the 1970's Giovanni was a leading poetic voice. her latest collection is "Acolytes" made in 2007. "once a snowflake fell
on my brow and I loved
it so much I kissed
it and it was happy and called its cousins" Giovanni is showing that she is the ground and when the snow fell on her brow and kissed her, the snow is falling lightly to the ground. The snow calling its cousins is just more snow falling to the ground. Poetry Analysis

a spring rain and I stood perfectly
still Giovanni is showing she is the ground and she is squeezing the snow. when the snow melted she "the ground" became a flower Poet's message I think the poet's message was that when the snow falls Giovanni is very excited and emotional about having her "friends" back. But when spring comes around she is alone and still because there is no one with her. Reflection http://www.biography.com/people/nikki-giovanni-9312272
