Transcript of University Entry

You must apply to each state individually
There are associated costs with this

Be aware of the relevant dates as these differ from state to state and university to university

Some courses require prerequisite entry
Medicine may require UMAT or interviews

Advanced science courses may require written applications or interviews
University Offers
Make sure that all your preferences count
You can change your preferences after results are out

Not what you expected? There are plenty of alternate options available

You do not need to spend all of your ATAR points
Which course?
Which University?
Find out as much as possible

Talk to people who go there to get first hand information

Not all courses are the same at each University

Choose wisely
Advanced programs and honors
Many universities may offer special entry for outstanding students.

All universities are eager to recruit the best students.

In terms of honors research, not all universities offer the same research.
Double Degrees
These are not designed for people who can’t make up their minds on what to do.

Aim to get where you want to go as soon as possible and don’t fiddle around with extras.

A carefully chosen double degree however can be a valuable qualification.
University is a way of life; it is your whole existence, social, economic and study. If you think that university is just an extension of school then you have the whole concept wrong.

Choose the university/course
YOU want to go to

Get as much information as possible so you can make an informed decision

Think about what subjects you enjoy at school

What are you good at?

The earlier you start looking the more time you have to decide
University is a very different way of learning compared to that you have experienced at school.

It requires a lot more drive from you personally.

There are no longer teachers looking over your shoulder making sure that you hand things in on time. That is your responsibility.
Once you're in.....

EVERYONE should apply for every possible scholarship that they are eligible for. Even if you don't think that you will get it.

NYSF participation is highly regarded on scholarship applications and interviews.

Scholarships are available from industry, governments, the universities themselves and various other local clubs and organisations.

Do your research. A scholarship can make a lot of difference.
In terms of Accommodation, there are three options:
Living on campus; or
Living at home; or
Living in lodgings.
Or another alternative is ADFA

The costs associated with attending university differ depending on the institution and course
Undergraduate Bachelor Degree - $15,000 to $33,000

Postgraduate Masters Degree - $20,000 to $37,000

Doctoral Degree - $14,000 to $37,000
For Domestic students who qualify for a HECS HELP loan, you will not need to pay any fees up front. You will instead accumulate a HECS debt which is then gradually payed back once you earn over a certain annual wage.

Living expenses can also vary markedly
Gap Year
Taking a gap year will mean that you
finish university a year later

It can help cement what you want to do

Studies show that students who take a gap year often do better because of their year off

Make sure your gap year has purpose
There are plenty of options such as volunteering, working or traveling

Many universities also offer mid-year entry which is also worth considering
Taking a gap year may also enable you to qualify for youth allowance
