Historians often struggle with analyzing recent history. Finding the patterns over time and determining cause and effect are more challenging when we are still witnessing the effects of choices made a few decades ago. The challenge of objectivity is even greater when the historian witnessed causal events in his or her own lifetime.
Regarding the 1970s, you have a distinct advantage, as it is not within your lifetime but close enough that you can draw relationships between events then with now. Most issues today have roots from many years back, decades and sometimes even centuries.
