Antartica Antartica who???? Antartica is at the bottom of the world and is the coldest place on this earth. The land of
ice is 14million km2 and is the 5th largest continent. The ice cap is 4km thick and when
in winter, antartica doubles it size by freezing its waters. Did you know when snow
touches the surface of antartica its immediantly freezes??? The climate Antartica is the coldest place on earth. Its coldest record was 89.2'C,
which was recorded in 21st of july, 1983. The maximum degree in
winter would be 80'C or90'C. In summer the maximum would be 5'C or 15'C. The AAD The AAD( the australian antartica division) is Australia's artic centres
for research about antartica. there are four centres in the australian territory
and they are:
-Casey
-Davis australian territory
-mawson
-macquarie island.
The AAD employ 70 scientifice staff. Timeline of explores and their achievements 1773: James Cook crosses Antartic circle and circumnavigates antartica, but doesn't see land
1819: Russian naval officer, captia Thaddeus B. is 2nd to cross antartic circle and circumnavigate antartica
1821:1st known landing achieved by american sealer captian John Davis
1902: captian Scott(UK), lead his first expedition to reach the south pole. Forced to turn back two months later
1907: Shackleton leads expedition to south pole but turns back because shortage of supplies
1909: australian Douglas Mawson is first to reach south pole
1935: Caroline Mikkelesn (norway) was the first person to step on antartica
1961: antartica treaty comes into affect
1997: Beorge Ousland was the first person to cross antartica unsupported Animals Emperor penguins Emperor penguins are the largest
of its species. the estimated population
is around 200 000 emperor penguiins whales the blue whale is the largest animal ever to live on our planet . Up to 100 tons, the whale easlily out weighs the heaviest of dinosaurs. the southern royal albatross the southern royal albatross has a population
of 15 000. The albatross loves to stay in the southern
ocean. The birds weigh 20 pounds. Food Chain Antartica's animals all need krill and all
the krill need the little things humans can't
