Motive: Wants to learn more about the world he lives in
Interests: Doesn't really have a lot of interests, but is a really curious boy
Role in community: Jonas is an eleven at the start of the book but becomes a twelve during the book. He is given the role of the receiver at the ceremony of twelve. The job of the receiver is to receive all the memories the giver has
Personality traits: Curious, All ways want to know more, perceptive, mature, emotional, smart
He liked the feeling of safety her in this warm and quiet room; he liked the expression of trust on the woman's face as she lay in the water unprotected, exposed, and free. (chapter 4)
"I couldn't quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so strong in the room." (chapter 16)
He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself. (chapter 22)
Strengths: Smart, courageous, quick thinker, brave
Motive: Jonas' best friend
Interest: Hanging out with friends, playing
Role in community: Same age as Jonas. He is given the assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation at the ceremony of twelve.
Personality traits: Funny, bubbly, a bit slow, immature

Weaknesses: Slow thinker, immaturity
Name: The Giver
Motive: Transfer his memories to the
receiver (Jonas). Also decides major
Interest: Reading, sitting in his room
Role in community: Takes the memories from previous Givers and keeps them until he has to pass them to the next receiver (Jonas). With the memories he makes decisions based on experiences from the past. In this book he is transmitting his memories to Jonas at the time.
Personality traits: wise, sometimes depressed, old, caring, loving
I have a great honor. So will you. But you will find that that is not the same as power. (chapter 11)
They need a Receiver to contain all that pain. And knowledge. (chapter 13)
"Having you (Jonas) here with me over the past year had made me realize that things must change. For years I've felt that they should, but it seemed so hopeless. Now for the first time I think there might be a way," The Giver said slowly. (chapter 20)

Motive: Friend of Jonas', a lovely, sweet girl
Interest: Caring for the old, playing with friends
Role on community: Fiona is the same age as Jonas and one of his closest friends. She is a normal child who is assigned to the house of the old at the ceremony of twelves. Her life is mostly normal with nothing exciting happening
Personality traits: good student, quiet, polite, well-mannered, has a sense of fun
Strengths: smart, caring, helpful

Role on community: Lily is a seven but becomes an eight at the ceremonies. She doesn't have a role in the community yet other than being a kid.
Personality traits: Bubbly, chirpy, loud
She (Lily) clenched her fist and the rest of the family smiled at her defiant gesture. (chapter one)
Name: Jonas' Mother
Motive: A mother figure to Jonas (Not Jonas' birth mother)
Role on community: Jonas' works for justice department. She punishes those who have broken the rules.
Personality traits: Smart, affectionate
Weaknesses: over powering
Name: Jonas' Father
Motive: Father figure to Jonas (Not his
Interest: Nurturing newborn kids
Role on community: Jonas' father is a nurturer.
He looks after the newborns and cares for them until they are given to their new family unit.
Personality traits: Smart, not very affectionate, no emotions

There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle. "Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please!" (chapter 16)
He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself. (chapter 19)
After Twelve, age isn't important. Most of us even lose track of how old we are as time passes.
