Songs that accurately fit Beowulf
by: Leah,
Abby C.,
and Brianna

We start out at the beginning of the story. King Hrothgar and his people have been tortured by a great beast named Grendel who has terrorized the town for twelve years. So, the king calls upon a hero, named Beowulf, to defeat the horrendous Grendel.

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need

[Chorus:]
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet

[Chorus]

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere
Watching me

Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like the fire in my blood

[Chorus]

" I need a hero"
by: Bonnie Tyler
We think that "I need a hero" is an accurate description of King Hrothgar looking for a hero. This is accurate because Hrothgar was searching for a strong and brave man to journey to the king's kingdom to fight Grendel. Low and behold, Beowulf heard his plea and journied to the kingdom and agreed to defend the kingdom and fight the evil monster. Beowulf also fit the description of the man both mentioned by the king and the song.

Years later, a thief steals a golden chalice from a dragon and it angers the dragon so much that he comes after Beowulf's kingdom. Beowulf was very old we suspect, but he wants to put an end to the dragon. He gathers up his army and takes the to fight the dragon, but when they get there they become scared and leave Beowulf, except for one, which is Wrothgar. King Beowulf goes and fights the dragon and it poisons him, causing him to die.
I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes
And I take it in
I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you, for you.

When the day has come
That I've lost my way around
And the seasons stop and hide beneath the ground
When the sky turns gray
And everything is screaming
I will reach inside
Just to find my heart is beating

Oh, you tell me to hold on
Oh, you tell me to hold on
But innocence is gone
And what was right is wrong

'Cause I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is to bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes
And I take it in
And I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

When the hour is nigh
And hopelessness is sinking in
And the wolves all cry
To fill the night with hollering
When your eyes are red
And emptiness is all you know
With the darkness fed
I will be your scarecrow

You tell me to hold on
Oh you tell me to hold on
But innocence is gone
And what was right is wrong

'Cause I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is to bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes
And I take it in
And I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you, for you.

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)
I'm bleeding out for you (for you)
I'm bleeding out for you (for you)
I'm bleeding out for you

'Cause I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is to bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes
And I take it in
And I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you, for you.

We believe that this song portrays Beowulf's death. This song tells about a death and people who care about that person have "red eyes" and tell him to hold on. We know that the whole kingdom mourned over King Beowulf's death and honored him with a pyre and burning his treasures with him. We would like to think that Wiglaf wanted Beowulf to pull through his final fight and live but we all know that the beloved Beowulf did not survive. In fact, he died a heroic death and lived a heroic life.
After Beowulf agrees to fight Grendel, he
and
Hrothgar's men are in Herot when Gr
endel comes
in. Beowulf and Grendel get into
this gigantic battle
and Beowulf discovers he wil
l have to fight the
beast by hand. Beowulf
and Grendel continue
fighting until Beow
ulf finally just rips of Grendel's
arm. The evil
Grendel limps back to his lair to die
and
Beowulf
keeps the arm as a prize, displaying it
in
H
erot.

"Battle of Evermore"
Lyrics copied from: www.azlyrics.com

Queen of Light took her bow, And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight, And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes.

Side by side we wait the might of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley bElow,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold, The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red.

Oh war is the common cry, Pick up your swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall, the ring wraiths ride in black, Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back. Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes.

"Bleeding Out"
[Intro:]
Du du du du-du du du
Du du du du du-du du du

[Chorus:]
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries
And just one mistake
Is all it will take.
We'll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
Hey, hey, hey
Remember me for centuries

Mummified my teenage dreams
No, it's nothing wrong with me
The kids are all wrong,
The story's all off
Heavy metal broke my heart

Come on, come on and let me in
The bruises on your thighs like my fingerprints
And this is supposed to match
The darkness that you felt
I never meant for you to fix yourself

We believe that "Battle of Evermore" fits the scene where Beowulf battles Grendel. This songs tells about waiting at night like Beowulf was waiting that night in Herot for Grendel. It also tells about dancing all night until the morning. The men partied all night and drank their mead and Grendel would come and kill men and terrorize them. We know it's awful. It also tells about waiting together in the darkness which it was probably night time when Grendel and Beowulf got into that epic fight.
"Centuries"

We think that this song by fall out boys helps describe Beowulf's men honoring and remembering him. The song talks about people rembering a legend for years and years. We still discuss and read Beowulf today in our literature classes even though this book was written years and years ago. Also, We're sure that Beowulf's kingdom remembered him for his heroic deeds and heroic death for centuries later.

Keeping on the outside
Glimmer in the moonlight
Only shadows tell where we are
Creeping on the edge of the dark

We feel warmth in the cold corners
Eyes in the back of our heads
We roll out when the day's over
Chasing silhouettes

When it all goes up in flames
We'll be the last ones standing
Be the last ones

City made of thin glass
Smoldering in pitch black
Sin so thick you can't see the stars
Can't tell good and evil apart

We all know that a lot of people go seeking revenge in the story of Beowulf. Grendel's mother, and Hrothgar are some that go seeking revenge. We think that this song is a good description of people wanting to seek revenge for the people that they lost or for themselves. The song describes revenge and anger clouding your judgement and it gng wrong. We think that Grendel's mother is so furious with her son's death that she goes and kills a man causing Beowulf to go after her and kill her. So, Grendel's mother's revenge clouded her Judgement and it "went up in flames".
