Transcript of the media industry

The media industry OK the media industry is like a big spider's web, everybody and everything, in fact, is connected to each other. There are many strands weaved together, obviously all of which originated from one strand to begin with. So here is my explanation of this spider's web to you dear reader. By the way you are probably thinking why i didn't use a spider web template, but prezi does not have a spiders web template. There was a tree though... with branches... signifying the companies' reach... hhhmmmm... i should of picked the tree... oh well, the map will have to make do. Here we go... the media industry is made up of big companies and small companies. The big companies are of course on top, these are the most popular companies with considerably more money than the smaller ones. The smaller ones on the other hand are other owned by one of these big companies or they stand on their own two feet and run their business independently, so these companies would be called indie.

The big companies are called a conglomerate and of course the smaller companies are called indie companies. For example, in the film industry a conglomerate would be 'Universal studios' and an Indie company would be the 'Independent film company', who have made such films as 'Mr Nice' and 'We need to talk about Kevin'. By the way you should probably know the types of media in the media industry before i go any further...
Film
Television
Publishing, i.e. Books, magazines, newpapers etc.
The internet
Music
Games
Radio Here are some terms that you should know also...
vertical integration, this is when a conglomerate company owns many subsidiary companies and then those subsidiaries have their subsidiaries and so on. For example, Comcast and NBC Universal own Universal studios, who then own many subsidiary companies as well.
horizontal integration, this is when one conglomerates buys out another. For example, When Disney bought Lucas film.
Media convergence, this is when two or more types of media come together. For example, a film company such as Universal studios would have their own website, www.universalstudios.com.
Synergy, This is when different elements of a company work together to promote related products. So for example, If Universal made a film they would promote the soundtrack to that movie that one of their companies had made.
Concentration of media ownership, this is the process by which an increasingly smaller number of companies own most media outlets. For example, The magazine company Haymarket media just owns magazines. Therefore they control most of the magazine market.
Cross media ownership, a company that produces two or more types of media. For example, Bauer Media produce magazines, TV channels and Radio stations.
Conglomerate, a large parent company which owns a range of smaller companies. For example, Universal studios owns many subsidiary film companies.
Subsidiary, Smaller companies owned by parent companies. For example, working title films are owned by Universal studios.
oligopoly, when the market is dominated by a small number of companies. To help explain how the industry works here is my little map to help explain how much of a spiders web this really is. The film Industry explained Universal studios
