5th hour ELA Figurative Language Alliteration is the repitition of consonants in a single phrase Alliteration Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Minimizing a statement to make a point. Understatement Example: "This might hurt," the man thought as he fell off the cliff. A single word that sounds like the thing it refers to. Onomatopoeia Example: "A burger was sizzling on the grill Speaking of something that is not human as if it was human Personification A metaphor compares two unlike things without using like or as. Metaphor Example: "My brother's a rat. When one thing is compared another unlike thing using the words like or as. Simile "My sister is like a doll" A great exaggeration that emphasizes a point Hyperbole Example: "The football team's linebacker was bigger than an elephant." Groups of words that mean something different than their individual meanings. Idiom "It's raining cats and dogs." Substituting a mild or vague term for one considered blunt and harsh. Euphemism Example: "Grandpa passed away." Making a statement that means the opposite of it's literal meaning. Irony Example: "Well that's just great."
