- Four trochees- a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM (da).
Shakespeare only used this form for supernatural beings.

One relationship in Macbeth is between the three witches. "Fair is foul and foul is fair". Shakespeare uses a paradox show that the witches think that normality, or what most people consider to be good or "fair", is foul to them and anything "foul" is, to them, "fair". This use of paradox sets the witches apart from the rest of society, making them appear as unnatural beings. In the Jacobean era, witches were seen as evil beings who were working with the devil. The Jacobean audience would have feared the witches as they believed that witches could cause bad fortune to befall them. James I had a deep interest in witches and believed that a storm he experienced whilst sailing back to Scotland from Denmark was caused by witchcraft; Shakespeare's inclusion of the witches would have immediately caught the King's interest. Shakespeare's use of rhyming couplets for the witches' lines shows the audience that the witches have a strong relationship, working together to manipulate others' destruction. The trochaic tetrameter of these lines creates a chanting effect,building upon the supernatural element as Shakespeare only used this form for supernatural characters, making their bond seem stronger as they become a menacing "other" to the Jacobean audience.
