The national income

is called its per capita income
or
the average income per head. The per capita income is an approximate index of the standard of

living in the country

because it shows the average amount of income

available to its citizens.

It is, (A) , a very rough index. In most developing countries, the national income is distributed very unevenly among the people. The greater part of it goes to the richer classes. So, the majority of the people have incomes

But, though the per capita income is a very inadequate index, it is better than the total figure of national income because it takes into account
not only
growth in income
but also
growth in population. (B) ,
to measure
the economic growth of a country over a period of time,
