Father's Day
Sunday, June 17, 2012
If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right.

~ Bill Cosby
When I was a boy of 14,
my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.

But when I got to be 21,
I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

~ Mark Twain
Malachi 4: 5-6

"Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD,

"He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."
The people had lost heart and were questioning God’s love (1:2) and justice (2:17).

Cynicism reigned (3:14-15), breaking of the commandments and oppression of the underprivileged were rampant (3:5)

Organized religion was held in contempt (1:7-14; 3:7-12)
God Spoke to Fathers to hold cultural cohesion
Hearts of Children = Heart of a Society
Covenant Faith of their forefathers.

"The LORD was very angry with your fathers.”

"Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Return to Me," declares the LORD of hosts, "that I may return to you," says the LORD of hosts.

“Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds."'

But they did not listen or give heed to Me," declares the LORD. "Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?”

~ Zechariah 1:2-5
"He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.“

(Mal 4:6)
