The Building Information Model is a three dimensional digital representation of a building and its intrinsic characteristics. It is made of intelligent building components which includes data attributes and
parametric rules for each object. For instance, a door of certain material and dimension is parametrically related and hosted by a wall. 3D LASER SCANNING ASBUILT BIM MODELS What is 3D Laser Scanning Also known as LiDAR (Light Detection & Ranging)
Camera like instrument which uses a laser beam to measure distance
Fires laser and for each point the laser hits it records an xyz value.
As well as recording distance it records the reflectivity of a surface which gives an intensity value.
Some scanners have in builts camera which takes photos,

Once the survey was completed a 3D asbuilt model was created to allow the engineers to virtually carry out design work and simulation of the installation of 2 new furnaces. Animation Made up of two storeys and covering over 10,000 sq m, the UWE conference centre is a vast building. Formerly the Hewlett Packard offices, the building has recently been acquired by the University of Bristol. Parsons Brinckerhoff the consultant engineers carrying out the refit of the building were looking for methods to survey the very complex ceiling void.
