Transcript of Western Cordillera

Western Cordillera Land form Regions Vegetation is different on each side of a mountain in this region.
Moist areas on the mountains have many evergreen trees such as the Douglas Fir growing.
In the northern part of the mountain trees grow much smaller.
Finally, In the southern parts of the mountains no trees grow at all due to the lack of precipitation. The Western
Cordillera What is the Western Cordillera? The Western Cordillera is a Landform region that stands along the western edge of Canada. It consists of many mountain that are separated by valleys and some plateaus. It is widely known for containing the only remaining glaciers other then the Arctic. The Western Cordillera is located in western Canada and consists of certain parts of British Columbia, Yukon, Alberta and the Northwest Territories Where is the Western Cordillera Located? There are 3 parts to the Western Cordillera and they are: The Rocky Mountains These Rocky mountains are located on the eastern side of the Cordillera and is made up of flooded sedimentary rock. There are many fossils in this area and it is believed that this part was once submerged underwater. These mountains were very difficult to cross in the past and still are very difficult today. Interior Plateaus The Interior Plateaus consists of many mountain ranges and it is located in the center of the Cordillera. These plateaus are mostly formed from volcanic activity and although they are shorter then the Rockies, these mountains are very challenging to cross. The Coast Mountains The Coast Mountains are a vast range of mountains that are made from igneous rock. These mountains are located on the western part of the Cordillera. These mountains form the island off the coast of B.C and Canada's highest peak know as Mount Logan is located here. Mount Logan Facts about the Western Cordillera The Western Cordillera formed during the Cenozoic Era
Most of the soil is rich and fertile thanks to the sand and salt deposited by rivers.
Most of the mountains are well over 3000 meters tall.
Mountains such as the Rocky Mountains are very steep
The mountains are much younger then the Appalachians.
They are separated by plains CLIMATE The western Cordillera would have 2 main climates, 1 from the Pacific Coast and the other being from the mountain ranges. There climate varies during the seasons. In the Pacific Coast the climate is very wet during fall and winter and there are hardly any signs of snow or extreme cold. The summers in this area are much like the rest of the country. The valleys are often mild with some rain. Over in the coastal region there could be up to 200 centimeters of rain! CANADA’S RED MOUNTAIN INTRODUCES MASSIVE EXPANSION PLANS The Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, B.C introduces an expansion that includes over 1000 acres of terrain
This will provide a whole new mountain known as Grey Mountain to the resort.
The resort is visited by many people everyday and is known for its incredible steeps and light dry snow. How are the characteristics of the region an important part to this event? The western cordillera has its amazing mountains that are made for activities like skiing.
Other then the arctic these mountains contain a lot of glaciers.
The skiing terrain is safe but could once have been the location of many of those glaciers
These glaciers would've moved away due to global warming
The climate also has a big effect on the resort
Thanks to the heavy snow fall this area would be a great place for an event like this. Vegetation! What types of rocks are found in this region? The Western Cordillera is made up of 3 rock types: Metallic Minerals: found in igneous rock
Non-Metallic Minerals: Include metamorphic and sedimentary rock
Energy Minerals: Coal, Natural gas etc. How was the Western Cordillera Formed? The western cordillera was formed when the Pacific
and North American plates collided. The Pacific plate
subducted under the N.A plate causing faulting and
Volcanic activity and the result was the Western Cordillera Human Activities in the Western Cordillera. Some major activites that take place are Mountain climbing/hiking/biking, Skiing and fishing. This would depend on the climate and the location. The Creation of the
Western Cordillera There were 2 pieces of land a long time ago that was separated by a large body of water. On one side were 2 lonely brothers and on the other side there was an unknown species of creatures. The older brother was named Ace and the younger bro was named Rocky. They were very strong and intelligent. Ace wanted to travel to the other side to see what was there and he decided to go alone. After building a boat out of the wood on the island he travailed to the other side. Ace made it to the other side but immediately was bombarded. He was very surprised and fought back but it wasn't good enough and he was trapped. Over a week passed and Rocky was worried so he got ready to set out. He made sure to have weapons just in case Rocky made it to the land and like Ace he was attacked. Rocky was ready and took out almost all the vicious creatures but that was until a creature more deadly then them all came out. Rocky knew this was the end. Suddenly, the earth started to shake and the creatures didn't know what was happening. Rocky however knew exactly what was going on since it happened a long time ago to him and his family in the past. This disaster seemed much worse but he figured out this was his chance. Rocky ran to go free his brother and as for the creatures they were more concentrated on the disaster. Rocky met up with Ace and explained the situation right away. They both decided to run away from the water. The water then begun to rise and spread out. Out of the water volcanoes erupted and magma came out. All of the creatures were too late and were wiped out. The boys were still running as fast as possible and made it out alive. They looked back and saw the volcanoes standing tall above the land. It was a beautiful sight. Over 2 billions years passed and the formation of the rocks and mountains changed. This resulted in the Western Cordillera
