Transcript of Writing Paragraphs

What is a paragraph? A paragraph is a group of sentences that are all about one topic. A paragraph has three parts: an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Writing Paragraphs What is a paragraph? Every good paragraph starts with a topic and a plan! Topic = Healthy Snacks Plan #1 Topic = Healthy Snacks
1 - Fruit
2 - Apples pears and grapes
2 - Sweet and Juicy
1 - Popcorn
2 - Air popping is healthiest
2 - A little bit of salt
1- Carrot and Celery Sticks
2 - Peanut Butter
2 - Ranch dressing
1 - Nuts and Raisins
2 - Good mix
2 - Chewy and Crunchy Paragraph:
Do you enjoy healthy snacks? One of my
favorites is fruit. Apples, pears, and grapes taste sweet and juicy. Popcorn is another tasty snack. We air-pop it and add a little bit of salt. I also enjoy carrot and celery sticks. Putting peanut butter on them or dipping them in ranch dressing adds a lot of flavor. The last snack I like is nuts and raisins. When mixed together, they are a chewy, cruchy treat. Clearly, these treats help build a healthy body and make your taste buds tingle. introduction = topic sentence
begins topic with a Quote, Question?, or Interesting Statement or Stance
NO DETAILS Body = details
Information about the topic Conclusion = Transition sentence
wraps up paragraph or transitions to next paragraph
NO DETAILS Writing good topic sentences = Q. Q. I. S/S Quote: People say, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" however, healthy snacks can be even more A Good introduction must introduce your topic specifically but with NO DETAILS! Question: What are the best healthy snacks? Interesting Statment: Though some people think healthy means boring, my favorite healthy snacks come in many different varieties. (number statement) Interesting Stance/Argument: Eating healthy snacks is the best way to stay fit and healthy. while Starter Words When I think back on special treats, I think of ice cream. I grew up in a family where ice cream was a frequent dessert. It was most often served in a dish, but on special occaisions my mom bough sugar cones at the corner drug store. On family holidays, we'd have pie or cake a la mode. I also have special memories of summer evening trips to the Dairy Queen in our neighborhood. Sometimes a long bike ride with my dad led to a chocolate-dipped soft-serve cone. I remember celebrating hard-fought softball victories with a stop at DQ with my teammates. The jingling of the ice cream man also brings back memories that make me smile. I met my best friend playing at a summer play ground, where we'd often enjoy a treat from the friendly, neighborhood ice cream man who stopped by each afternoon. It's a sound that still causes me to smile and look out the front door on a lazy summer day. I have precious memories of this special treat, ice cream. Writing Conclusions When you're doing the CSAP, always have a good intro and conclusion. DON'T SKIP IT! DO NOT USE:

This was my paragraph/essay about....
That is all I have to say about....
I hope you like my paper. Conclusions should have 3 parts: 2) 2-3 Summary sentences of the information: Whether eating freshly caught Maine Lobster or the pastries pulled right out of the oven, the best foods are always the freshest ones. 3) Restate the thesis, but in different words: When I choose to go out, my favorite foods are freshly grilled fajitas, baked lobster and freshly made pastries Or - Make the reader reflect, or do a particular action: Next summer, get a nice cold ice cream and relax! Many people like the same kinds of things all the time; however, my tastes run from spicy Mexican to simple American. There are so many food types to chose from it's hard to narrow it down. Despite the large numbers of great foods out there, my favorite foods consist of New York Style Pizza, green chile, and Vietnames pho. "Variety is the spice of life."
Who doesn't believe that variety is the spice of life?
By liking many kinds of foods, my diet stays interesting and varied.
Many people say that variety is the spice of life and without it, life is boring. That quote from an English poet describes the best way to look at my favorite foods. Many people like the same kinds of things all the time; however, my tastes run from spicy Mexican to simple American. There are so many food types to chose from it's hard to narrow it down. Despite the large numbers of great foods out there, my favorite foods consist of New York Style Pizza, green chile, and Vietnamese pho. Who doesn't like good food? My favorite foods are always made with the best ingredients. If it's fresh and made by hand, I'm probably going to like it. My favorite foods consist of those things that I like but can't make myself at home. That's the way it should be: like a home-cooked meal, even if you can't make it yourself. Therefore, my money for going out is often spent on fajitas, lobster, and fresh baked pastries. EX #1: EX #2: I like pie. Ice cream is good too. Its cold and tasty. They are good foods. Has enough 2's tell me more sentences and 3's (details) to clearly explain your ideas WITHOUT REPETITIONS! Though one can find many kinds of pizza, New York style pizza has the best crust and healthiest options. New York style pizza is the kind with the thinner crust. This means that though you can't put a lot of toppings on it, it also means you get to enjoy all the flavors: crust, sauce, cheese and toppings, without one overwhelming the other. My favorite pepperoni and jalepenos or chicken can be my favorite flavorful toppings. Also, the thin crust has fewer calories and less grease than thicker crust pizzas. The best place to get this kind of pizza in my home town is David's New York Style Pizzaria. I used to eat there at lunch during high school because it was close and convienent. They have the best crust in Stockton and when I go home on vacation, I always want to eat there at least once. Topic = Favorite foods
