The term gymnastics comes from the word gymnos *It started out as exercise
*Physical fitness was highly valued in ancient Greece. *Johann Friedrich GutsMuths developed a program of exercise that was supposed to improve balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. *Gymnastics spread through Europe mainly as physical training for the military. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn was known as the father of modern gymnastics Men's- 1896
Women's-1936 Germany, Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland *In modern gymnastics there are 6 events for men and 4 events for women *The international competitive teams consist of 6 team members *Bars *Balance Beam
*Vault *Floor *Pummel horse, parallel bars, rings, high bar, vault and floor *Pummel horse *Parallel bars *Rings *High bar *Vault *Floor *Gymnasts are scored on an individual score and a team score *Gymnastics-Physical exercises designed to develop and display strength, balance, and agility, especially those performed on or with specialized apparatus.
