The 13 Original Colonies

A group of British colonies along the east coast of North America that declared independence in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Virginia
This colony was founded in 1607 by John Smith. It was classified as one of the southern colonies. It was an English colony until 1776, until it came in rebellion against Great Britain then it became the U.S. state of Virginia.
New York
Massachusetts
The Massachusetts colony was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop and other Puritans. They named it after an Algonquion tribe meaning "At the Great Hill"
Maryland
It was founded in 1633 by George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, and other colonists. It lasted until 1776 until it came in rebellion with Great Britian and it became the U.S. state of Maryland.

Pennsylvania was founded in 1682 by William Penn. It became a state in 1776.
