Transcript of Layers of the Earth

LAYERS OF THE EARTH
AVOCADO TIME!!!!
Outer Core
The outer shell of the core
surrounds the inner core
and is made of liquid nickel and iron
Mantle
The Solid layer of Earth
between the crust and the
core; made of dense silicates
Crust
The thin solid outermost layer of Earth
made of less dense silicates and is continental (landmasses) or oceanic ( ocean bottoms)
Talk to your elbow partner
and discuss why you think
an avocado is similar to the
layers of the earth
Questions to keep in mind
Why does Earth have layers?
What are the primary chemical components of the crust
crust, ,mantel, and core?
Where and what are the differences of asthenosphere and
lithosphere?
What should considered when developing a model
of Earth's layers?
The mantle is a rocky layer located under the crust; it is composed of silicon, oxygen, magnesium, iron, aluminum, and calcium.
When constructing a model of the layers of Earth, chemical composition, state of matter, and thickness of each layer should be considered.
The crust and mantle are composed primarily of the elements, oxygen and silicon, known as silicates.
Earth’s layers can be identified using two properties:
(1) basic chemical composition, and
(2) state of matter.
The outer core is in the liquid state and the inner core is in the solid state of matter.
ESS 7.3- Students use art media to show the layers of the Earth.
3PR- Represent depth and volume in their two-dimensional works of art.

the center of Earth;surrounded by the
liquid outer core
INNER CORE
Asthenosphere
The lower layer of the crust.
The Solid layer with
PLASTICITY
in the upper mantle. The asthenosphere is a shallow layer of the upper mantle and lies directly below the lithosphere. The state of matter of the asthenosphere is a solid; however, it has “plasticity” that allows it to flow.
Lithosphere
Plasticity: is solid but still being able to
flow without being a liquid

The cool, rigid outermost layer of the Earth
consists of the crust and the uppermost
part of the mantle; pieces of this layer
are called lithospheric plates

the solid part of the earth consisting of the crust and outer mantle
silicate n. Any of numerous compounds containing silicon, oxygen, and one or more metals; a salt of silicic acid
The seed is like the inner core.
The skin of the avocado
is like the crust.
