Developmental Stages: 2nd Grade By: Hannah Phillips, Karen Lambert,

Ashley Evans Physical Development Social learning theories focus on the idea that children’s goals and what they believe have much to do with their actions. It’s also noted that a majority of children learn about behavior is from watching other people’s behavior. Social Development An increase in bonding with people other than family members, such as friends. Emotional Development 2nd graders (7 year olds) are often still excited about school. Cognitive Development Video They do well in structured physical activities where they can achieve recognition for their achievements. Nature plays a role in physical development. Some children are genetically predispostioned to grow taller faster or have larger or smaller body frames. Physical growth during this age is at a slower pace. Children tend to have longer limbs and thin out during this stage of development. Like the seasons, the tides, the turning of the earth on its axis around the sun, the birth and death of stars, the music of the universe—there is an ebb and flow to life that is mystical and spiritual as well as natural.” – Yardsticks Psycho dynamic theories promote the idea that experiences children have early in life affect the outcome of their social and personality development.
Sociocultural theories discuss the idea that skills like ways of thinking, learning of tools and ability to communicate are best taught through authentic experiences with other people. Children can now analyze and talk about characters and plot more fluidly. They are more apt to use vocabulary and spelling words in conversation. They can apply what they have learned about basic math to word problems. You’ll need:
•1 die
What to do:
•On a piece of paper, each player must create a grid that’s five squares long and four squares high.
•In each box, players randomly write an even number from two to 12.
•Player one rolls the die, and all players must figure out the resulting number’s double. Players put an X in one of the squares on their grid that includes that number.
•The game continues until the first player completes a row, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally and calls out, “Double Trouble!” For a more challenging variation, play with two dice and create a grid that includes the even numbers from four to 24.
