Transcript of SPACE !!!!

smallest planet - solar system
slightly larger than the Earth's moon
closest planet- sun
distance of 58 million km -sun.
1 day on Mercury - 59 Earth days.
Mercury - complete orbit -88 Earth days
no moons
till now- two spacecrafts-
Mariner 10-1974-5
Messenger - flew past Mercury 3 times in 2011
S lar System
Our Solar System contains 9 planets which includes 1 dwarf planet with 1 huge star. The planets are:
Mercury Pluto(dwarf planet)
Sun (star)
3rd planet- sun
distance of 150 million km
One day - 24 hours
complete orbit around the sun -365 days
one moon (another name- moon - satellite)
Earth's atmosphere -of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen - 1% other substances
Most planets have atmospheres - Earth's atmosphere is breathable
rocky planet, (terrestrial planet) - mountains, valleys, canyons, plains
many more terrestrial planets but earth is different from others- Earth is an ocean planet, 70% of the Earth is covered in oceans.
5th planet - sun
distance of 778 million - sun
One day - 10 hours
one complete orbit around - sun -12 earth years
atmosphere -made up of Helium and Hydrogen
great red spot -huge storm - more than 100 years.
Many missions- Jupiter- its moons
next mission -Juno mission which will take place - 2016.
7th planet - sun
3rd biggest planet
Uranus - 1st planet to be discovered - telescope
Venus- Uranus -rotates from east to west
Voyager 2 - spacecraft
no life -atmosphere is surrounded by poisonous gases.
discovered - 1930
no longer-considered a full size planet
3 points- being full sized planet.
1) It is in orbit around the sun.
2) It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium.(almost round shape).
3)It has cleared the orbit around it.
meets - 2 points
not the 3rd
not considered a full size planet.
kuiper belt
white winged stallion
Greek mythology
can be seen in the summer and autumn
Northern Hemisphere
live below the equator(Southern Hemisphere) you can see it in the winters and spring
you actually look at the constellation - wont actually be able to see a horse
because - constellation- upside down
nearest star to Earth- located i- Pegasus
recognized -over 2000 years
brightest star in this constellation - Epsilon Pegasi (-2.39 magnitude)
square of Pegasus-constellation- very famous asterism- is visible in the night sky
also believed-Pegasus carried Zeus's thunderbolts through the sky.
There are many easy ways to remember planets
for e.g My - Mercury
Very - Venus
Excellent - Earth
Mother - Mars
Just - Jupiter
Served - Saturn
Us - Uranus
Nachos - Neptune

Milky Way
How do we get night and day ?
slowly spins- north to south - axis - Earth
24 hrs - one complete turn
- side of the Earth- facing - Sun-daytime
side of the Earth - not facing- Sun- night time- that side
365 1/4 days -Earth -go around- Sun.
2nd closest planet
distance - 108 million km - sun
One day - is 243 days
one complete orbit -sun- 255 earth days.
no moons - Mercury.
Many spacecrafts
Magellan mission - 1990's.
mission mapped 98% - planets surface
Till now- no evidence of life has been found
planet spins backwards - to other planets
sun rises in the west and sets in the east.
also called the red planet
because iron minerals in the soil oxidize, which makes the soil and the dusty atmosphere to look red
2 moons - Phobos and Deimos
Many spacecrafts -touched the surface of Mars.
1st successful mission - Mariner 4-n 1965
4th planet -sun
distance - 228 million km
6th planet - sun
1.4 billion km - sun.
gas giant
does not have a solid surface
2nd biggest planet after Jupiter
interesting fact - least density - entire solar system
density - less than water -means it is lighter than water
will float on water and not sink.
only planet which has rings around it
rings are made up of tiny particles-all orbitin
cannot see Saturn - naked eyes - have to use a telescope
really far away from the sun- extremely cold
no life can exist
. Saturn- 30 satellites(moons).
galaxy - contains- solar system
cannot see -Milky Way - you can't tell the difference between- stars - Milky Way
name -Milky Way came - Latin term- Milky Circle
called Milky- dim band glowing arch across the sky
Spiral Galaxy
caused by - tilt of earths axis
tilting gives - 4 seasons
axis is tilted- different parts- globe are oriented towards- sun at different times of the year
axis - imaginary line across the earth
north to south pole
Science Pr ject !!
Rhea Baweja 7S

star and a hot burning ball of gas
99.8%of the total mass of the solar system
not a solid body, so different parts of the sun rotate at different rates
solar atmosphere - features
solar flares-on the sun
outer atmosphere - corona
corona extends beyond the orbit of dwarf-planet Pluto
eighth planet - sun
outermost planet - solar system.
Uranus -Neptune- extremely far away - sun
really cold - 2nd planet - discovered -telescope
Neptune- 6 faint rings
Voyager 2- only spacecraft
8 satellites
makes a complete orbit around - sun - 165 years
first discovered- 1846
completed - first orbit around - sun - 2011.
1846-Neptune - found - largest moon Triton.
Galaxy and Universe
massive-gravitational system of stars
consists of everything- stars,planets,galaxies etc.
2 types- lunar and solar
Lunar- earth gets between the sun and the moon
Solar- moon gets between the earth and the sun
orbits the earth - approximately 28 days-lunar month
kept in orbit by earths gravity
does not give its own light-reflects light on earth-
different views - of the moon at different times of month - phases of the moon
we see different amounts of the moon at different times in the moons orbit around the earth
far side of the moon- effect on the moon of tidal forces due to earth
