Who were the Moors? Who were the Venetians? How were the Moors/Venetians regarded in Shakespeare's day? Othello Questions In Othello, the Moors were people of dark skin from eastern Africa and were Muslim. Moor was the common term for all African people. A diplomatic delegation from Morocco had arrived in Elizabethan London and had favorably impressed the English people. They were powerful rich people because they were good at trading, they were well respected in Othello. The Venetians were Italians, of course, who the Elizabethans viewed as temperamental, passionate, and romantic. What was the military Hierarchy? The military hierarchy was the military salaries were obtained by victories. The kick out cities and got gain that became their rewards for military services. What were the military duties of ranked officers? They were mostly lords. They levied, outfitted, trained, and supplied their own troops. What was the role of women? In Othello the role of Desdemona,Emilia, and Bianca portray how women were during the 15th century. Women were portrayed as being loyal to their husbands doing what they are told, and not going against their husbands judgment or actions. What was expected of a daughter? Daughter's were expected to follow their father's decisions. They had no voice. The father was in charge of his daughter, making all her decisions for her until she was married off. What was expected of a bride? The basic things that were expected of a bride in Othello were obedience, trust, and loyalty. At this time, women had no voice. First their fathers rule and then their husbands did. What relationships between men and women were considered above reproach? At the start of the play, marital fidelity is considered above reproach, specifically he trusts his Desdemona and loves her so much. What rules for getting married existed at the time of the play? Women were suppose to be faithful and respectful to their fathers and family. Womens were married with a gift that their family provided and they prepared household possessions to contribute to their new home. What were the rules of courtship?
