of Criminal Profiling Andrei Chikatilo A Soviet serial killer, nicknamed The Butcher of Rostov, The Red Ripper, and The Rostov Ripper, who committed the murder of 53 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in Rostov Oblast, Russian SFSR. ANDREI ROMANOVICH CHIKATILO Mugshot of Andrei Chikatilo ndrei Chikatilo was born on October 16, 1936, in the Ukraine state of the USSR. Chikatilo had a A difficult childhood and the only sexual experience as an adolescent ended quickly and led to much ridicule, leading to later sexually violent acts. EARLY LIFE Chikatilo is believed to have suffered from hydrocephalus (water on the brain) at birth, which caused him genital-urinary tract problems later in life, including bed-wetting into his late adolescence and later, the inability to sustain an erection, although he was able to ejaculate. Chikatilo moved to Shakhty, a small coal mining town near Rostov, where he committed his first documented murder. 1978 n December 22, he lured a nine-year- O Yelena Zakotnova in secret from his family and attempted to rape her. When the girl struggled, he stabbed her to death. old girl to an old house which he bought He ejaculated in the process of knifing the child, and from then on he was only able to achieve sexual arousal and orgasm through stabbing and slashing women and children to death. tarting November 1978, and continuing for the next 12 years—dozens of corpses (young women and children of both sexes) would be discovered in forests near train and bus S depots in Rostov-on-Don region of Russia. On average, Chikatilo was killing about 5.3 persons per year. As the years progressed, there were more victims than the last year. In the summer of 1984 alone, there were 15 victims. Most of the killings were done midweek, from Tuesday to Thursday. An interesting twist was the hypothesis that Chikatilo responded to changes in weather patterns. Before most of the murders, the barometer had dropped. CRIMINAL PROFILE Ordinary, solitary, non-threatening and verbally persuasive; he was able to lure women, children of both sexes, and homeless individuals whom he likely promised food, shelter, toys, candy, or shorter routes to a specific destination. 45 to 50 years old, the age at which sexual perversions often are most developed A man who suffered from some form of sexual inadequacy "Necrosadist", or someone who achieves sexual gratification from the suffering and death of others, as was evident on many of the victims
Victims would be brutally raped and killed, then stabbed repeatedly especially around the face
Many had their eyes gouged out and tongues bitten off; others disemboweled
Fantasies became more violent with each victim Used local commuter trains to target his victims and then lured them into the nearby forest Likely to have had a difficult childhood If he was married, it was a strained marriage; his wife would let him keep to his own hours and did not much ask of him During the investigation, bodily fluids (semen and sweat) had been recovered from the crime scene of Markov’s (Victim #17, 27 December 1983). It had type AB antigens. Chikatilo had been under suspicion and arrested for behaving oddly at a bus station. His blood type, however, did not match the suspect profile.

What was not realized at the time was that Chikatilo’s actual blood type, type A, was different than his other bodily fluids (type AB). He was a member of a minority group known as “non-secretors”, whose blood type cannot be inferred by anything other than a blood sample. As police only had a sample of semen, and not blood, Chikatilo was able to escape suspicion of murder. Today’s sophisticated DNA techniques are not subject to the same fallibility.

On 21 November 1990, investigators were able to obtain a sample of Chikatilo's semen to test his blood type; the results confirmed that Chikatilo's semen was type AB, whereas his blood and saliva were type A. Forensics used to help with catching and convicting Chikatilo February 16, 1994 Chikatilo received the death sentence and was executed by a single gunshot behind the right ear. "I am a mistake of nature, a mad beast."
