What is Photography?
Photography is the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.
Photography involves capturing images with a camera. These images can be of just about anything, including people, places, animals, objects, or events.
A Professional Photographer
A professional photographer does much more than just take pictures, though. Professional photographs are often able to elicit certain feelings. Simply looking at professional photographs can bring on feelings of happiness, dismay, fear, awe, nostalgia, or even hunger.
Expert photographers are also able to make people or situations appear different than they really are. This can be done by utilizing different lighting techniques, or positioning people or objects a certain way. With today’s advanced image editing software, many photographers also change some elements of their photographs in order to make them look a particular way.
Photographers can – and will – often choose to focus their career in a certain area of photography. Some photographers might only shoot portrait pictures, for example, which involves taking pictures of people, particularly their faces.
Glamor photographers and fashion photographers will take pictures of models and their clothes. These pictures, however, are meant to enhance a person’s beauty or style, and many of them are retouched or airbrushed.
Still life photography, on the other hand, involves taking pictures of static, or still, objects. This can include such things as scenery or architecture.
Photojournalism generally generally involves shooting pictures of newsworthy events. These types of photographers are usually referred to as photojournalists, and they are often hired by newspapers and magazines.
There are also other specialized types of photography, including science photography, nature photography, underwater photography, wedding photography, and advertising photography.
Types of Photography
A photojournalist takes pictures of newsworthy events as they are happening. In order to these types of shots, a photojournalist must have excellent timing and be ready for anything. Many times, if a photojournalist is a second too early or too late, he won’t get the shot. In some instances, capturing these types of photographs may even involve an element of danger.
Since photojournalism is such a fast paced career, these professionals must be very quick on their feet and in good physical shape. This career often involves pushing one’s body to the limits. For example, a photojournalist will often travel frequently and stay in less than ideal areas, including third world countries and war zones.
A photojournalist will also need to lug camera equipment around as well. This will usually include equipment like cameras, extra batteries, external light sources, and chargers. Depending on where a photojournalist is shooting, he might also need to carry a traditional film camera, along with extra rolls of film. For example, this type of photography equipment may be needed in areas where charging a digital camera isn’t possible.
A nature photographer uses photography equipment, like cameras and different lenses, to capture photographs of different types of nature scenes. Besides focusing on just nature scenes in general, many photographers will also specialize in photographing specific subjects in nature as well.
A career in nature photography often requires skills that may not be needed in some other types of photography, like fashion photography. First of all, animals usually won’t cooperate well when it comes to posing. Nature photographers must be ready to get great pictures when the animals are. This often requires a great deal of patience, and obtaining one single quality shot can often take hours, or even days.
Also, a career in nature photography might also require a great deal of travel as well. Not every nature photographer is lucky enough to live smack dab in the middle of a forest or nature preserve. They will usually have to go where the action is, so to speak.
Photographing animals might also require the use of certain specialized photography equipment, particularly special lenses. Long lenses that enable a camera to zoom great distances will often come in handy when trying to photograph animals from a distance. These allow a nature photographer to take pictures of animals without spooking them or putting themselves in harm’s way. Macro lenses, on the other hand, allow photographers to take extreme close-ups of very small animals, insects, and plants. Underwater photography equipment is also necessary for taking photographs of marine life.
Unlike some other photographers, nature photographers may not have access to a power source for days or even months. Since they will sometimes be unable to charge digital cameras, some of them may need to resort to “old fashioned” photography techniques. This usually means that they will need to use photography equipment that requires the use of film and not digital memory cards.
Wildlife photographers shoot photographs of wild animals in their natural surroundings. Some wildlife photographers are opportunists, meaning that they photograph any animal that happens across their paths. Others, however, are a little more particular and choose to photograph only certain species or types of animals.
Depending on where they live, some wildlife photographers might be able to do their jobs right from their backyards, or at least close to their home. Since it requires very particular subjects, however, wildlife photography as a career generally requires extensive travel. These types of photographers typically have to go where the action is, so to speak. Their destinations are usually determined by which subjects they hope to shoot. For instance, if their intended subjects are polar bears, they would travel to the Arctic Circle. If their intended subjects were lions, however, they would travel to the plains of Africa.
Because nature photographers often need to travel to the farthest corners of the globe, they should be well-versed in the ways of the world. They should truly enjoy and make an attempt to understand the native culture and language where they are traveling. Sometimes being able to effectively communicate with native inhabitants can mean the difference between going home with nothing and going home with the shot of a lifetime.
Wildlife photographers should also be very comfortable with being outdoors for long periods of time. Camping, hiking, and survival skills are usually a must for anyone interested in a wildlife photography career. At times, a wildlife photographer will spend hours, days, or even months camped outdoors, just waiting for the perfect shot.
Nature and wild animals have a tendency to be rather difficult to predict. Because of this, wildlife photographers must be very patient individuals. They will often lay in wait for long periods of time in order to get the shots that they want. For instance, a lion pride will not chase down a zebra on command. They’ll get around to it when they’re good and ready, not when a photographer wants them to. When the time does come for a perfect shot, however, a wildlife photographer has only one chance to capture it; he must be quick and shoot quickly, since wild animals aren’t likely to repeat an action simply because the photographer didn’t get the shot he wanted.
Combat photography is taking visual pictures covering air, sea, and ground actions of war and soldiers. The pictures taken have background and meaning within it much like Photojournalism. Some Combat Photographers wrote: "In our opinion, the camera is the most powerful weapon in war. As combat photographers, we faced the complicated challenge of finding a balance between our roles as photojournalists and our dedication to military duties. After all, there wasn’t a manual with the answer to every possible scenario regarding when to shoot our cameras, and when to shoot our guns. We had to rely on gut instincts, closely assess each situation and act as our consciences dictated. Our decisions were largely based on how dire the situation was, and whether our contributions behind the gun would help save the lives of military men and women... We wanted to show the world what happened so that it didn’t go unrecognized. Ten or 20 years down the road, people will look back, and our pictures will be there as evidence of these wars and the soldiers who fought them. There’s satisfaction in our profession as combat photographers because we’ve had the distinct honor of immortalizing the heroism exhibited by young American men and women in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Plus, we’re both equally as proud to have honorably served a combined 32 years in the military ourselves."
One of a celebrity photographer’s first jobs is to keep up with the popularity of the stars. A celebrity photographer must be prepared to keep up with the current trends and celebrity popularity.
Since many celebrities enjoy their privacy, celebrity photographers must ensure that they are in the position to get close to celebrities. In most cases, this means that they must live within a close vicinity of where celebrities often live or work. Some celebrity photographers may even work with informants who inform the photographers where and when the celebrities will be.
A celebrity photographer will usually work with several different types of photography equipment. Zoom lenses, for instance, are often a celebrity photographer’s best friends. These types of lenses allow the photographer to get close-up shots of celebrities from great distances.
The most popular photographs, however, are the photographs that depict celebrities in less-than-attractive situations. A celebrity photographer must not feel limited to taking photographs of so-called normal everyday life. He must be willing to take photographs of the more unpleasant aspects of a celebrity’s life. For instance, he should be willing to take photographs of a celebrity’s darkest moments. Even photographs of an otherwise impeccable celebrity’s bad hair day are often worth their weight in gold.
Close-up photographs of some very small images can be very revealing. With these images, we can often see the tiny details of an object that were completely invisible before.
Macro photography is a type of photography that allows us to get an extreme close-up view of certain things. Usually, the subjects in macro photography are very small. Some objects that can be shot may include…
Insects, Flowers, Leaves, Snowflakes, Electrical Components, Food Particles, Hair Shafts, Products
…and many more. Basically, if it is a small or even tiny object, its image can be captured through macro photography.
A macro photographer may devote the majority of his career to this special form of photography, or he may combine these skills with other types of photography careers. Some nature photographers and wildlife photographers, for instance, may use macro photography techniques and equipment to capture some images.
In 1858, the first aerial photograph was taken over Paris, France. It was taken by French balloonist and photographer, Gaspar-Felix Tourachon, better known as Nadar.
Aerial photography refers to taking photographs from a relatively high point above the surface of the earth. True aerial photographs are typically taken from something that is not supported by or attached to the ground. These objects are usually floating or flying, and the camera is either attached to them or operated by a photographer who is a passenger.
Here are a few examples of contraptions that can be used to take aerial photographs:
Zeppelins and blimps
Remote control airplanes
Hot Air Balloons
There are two ways that an aerial photographer can capture aerial photographs. First, he can attach a camera to a flying or floating device, such as a kite or remote control plane, and snap pictures that way. He can also ride in or operate an aircraft – or lighter-than-air craft – and snap photographs that way. This method allows the photographer to have greater control over the looks of the final photographs, but it also requires the photographer to hover far off the ground. Because of this, there is no room for a fear of heights in this profession.
A wedding is typically one of the most memorable days in a lifetime, one that people remember for years to come. For most couples, regular pictures just won’t do. Wedding photography is a big business and a very specialized type of photography.
Basically, wedding photography involves taking photographs of wedding ceremonies and participants. However, most professionals realize that there is much more to wedding photography than simply snapping a few pictures. Only the highest quality and most original photographs will do.
The number of photographs taken at an average wedding is staggering. The most important photographs are usually those that are of the bride and groom, and the rest of the wedding party. Subjects in many of these photos are usually meticulously posed. Candid shots are also taken at weddings as well, such as photos of the little girl dancing on her father’s feet or the bride smashing cake in the groom’s face. These types of shots are sometimes the most treasures.
First and foremost, an underwater photographer must learn how to dive safely. Although, this may be possible using nothing more than a face mask and snorkel tube, the majority of underwater photographers choose to become certified SCUBA divers.
Contrary to popular belief, SCUBA is actually an acronym, which stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. During SCUBA training, divers are taught how to breathe underwater using a SCUBA tank, which is a metal tank that contains compressed air. When a valve is opened on the tank, it sends oxygen through a tube and into the diver’s mouth. Safety is extremely important while diving as well. Diving students learn about several different safety precautions, including how to rise to the surface and what to do if their oxygen tanks malfunction.
Once an underwater photographer becomes a certified SCUB diver, he will do just what other photographers do – they take photographs.
In order to take these photographs, however, underwater photographers must use special equipment. This includes cameras that are usually sealed in watertight plastic containers. Since light bends and reacts differently when it passes through water, special flashes are also usually necessary when taking photographs underwater.
Underwater photographers must make sure that this equipment is in top condition before diving. The waterproof cases should not be damaged, since this can cause water to leak in and ruin the equipment.
An underwater photographer can take pictures of several different things once he’s below the surface. Some photographers may choose to concentrate on marine wildlife, for example. This can include animals such as fish, dolphins, and turtles, as well as underwater vegetation. An underwater photographer might also choose to focus on things like underwater wreckages or ruins, such as sunken ships or lost cities.
Travel photography is a subcategory of photography involving the documentation of an area's landscape, people, cultures, customs and history. Travel photography, unlike other genres like fashion, product, or food photography, is still an underestimated and relatively less monetized genre, though the challenges faced by travel photographers are lot greater than some of the genres where the light and other shooting conditions may be controllable.
This genre of photography entails shooting a wide variety of subjects under varied available conditions, e.g. low light photography indoors, available ambient light photography for exteriors of buildings and monuments, shooting on the streets where sometimes conditions may be hostile, capturing moments which rarely recur, capturing the magic of light while shooting landscapes, etc.
Not everyone is perfectly flawless. In fact, no one is flawless at all. Even the models in magazines and on billboards, although gorgeous, have their flaws as well. In recent years, partly due to media, so-called ordinary people have come to understand that the seemingly perfect appearance of the majority of models is partly due to the work of talented photo retouchers.
Photo retouching, sometimes called retouching or airbrushing, refers to the process of manipulating photographs in order to slightly change the looks of a subject. This includes basic “fixes”, like erasing pimples or making a ruddy complexion appear even. Some talented photo retouchers can also perform more complex “fixes”, such as making a subject appear slimmer or even morphing two or more subjects seamlessly. In some cases photo retouchers may work as photographers as well. Photo retouching as a career generally involves using advanced computer imaging software to change the appearance of a photo or other digital image.
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
Airbrushing involves the use of a tool that uses forced air to spray paint or other liquid medium onto a surface. Small compressors are often used to provide the compressed air. The paint is usually stored in a small reservoir on either the top or bottom of the tool. As the air is forced through a thin tube in the tool, it sucks the paint into the tube and blows it out the end and onto the surface to be painted. The majority of airbrush artists create their artwork freehand, but stencils can also be used. An airbrush tool can be used to create artwork on nearly any type of surfaces, including traditional canvases and vehicles. It can also be used to create artwork on a person’s skin and fingernails.
An art dealer is a professional in the art world that is responsible for buying and selling pieces of art work, like paintings and sculptures. Of course, there is typically more to the profession than that. Art dealers must be able to choose pieces that may be popular with the general public or pieces that a certain client may like. In short, they typically need to find pieces of art that are almost sure to sell in order to make a profit, not just pieces of art they enjoy themselves. Most importantly, art dealers must have a true passion for and knowledge of fine art, art history, current art trends, and the entire art world in general. They should also have excellent communication skills and be very outgoing, which will help them establish a large network of other art professionals. Business skills are equally important, and these professionals should be able to get the best prices on pieces of art and keep track of their transactions.
Put simply, a professional graffiti artist – like an amateur graffiti artist – is a type of artist that uses graffiti as a means of expressing himself. Unlike amateur artists, however, professional graffiti artists typically do not make a habit of defacing public or private property with their art.
Professional graffiti artists may use several different mediums. Like many street artists, however, the preferred medium for professional graffiti is usually spray paint.
Depending on his specialty, a graffiti artist may work in a studio, just like a traditional painter. Some graffiti artists, however, particularly those who have honed their skills on city streets, may prefer to stay with this locale.
While some individuals who pursue a graffiti career take credit for their work, some prefer to remain anonymous. This anonymity is part of the allure and mystique of a graffiti artist, which many believe makes the work more appealing.
Painting is often much more than simply creating pictures, however. Artists often use their paintings as a means of self-expression, for instance. Nearly every painting that they create is meant to convey certain feelings or emotions. Traditional fine artists may create several different types of paintings, depending on their preferences and skills. Some artists prefer to paint scenes, for instance, while others may prefer to paint portraits. Talented painters will often have their finished works displayed in art galleries or museums. Some modern painters, on the other hand, may use entire buildings as canvases. These individuals are often known as mural painters, and they are often commissioned by individuals, companies, or municipalities to create large painted scenes on interior or exterior walls. Other painters may specialize in restoring existing paintings.
Sketching and Drawing
A sketch is a rough or unfinished drawing or painting, often made to assist in making a more finished picture.
Before the invention of cameras and computers, every illustration in a medical journal or medical textbook was drawn by talented artists. Today, although many of the images found in these publications are photographs, there are still a handful of medical illustrations.
Basically, medical illustration is a cross between medicine and art. This type of illustration involves drawing detailed images of certain aspects of medicine or biology. The drawings produced by medical illustrators are meant to create a visual representation of certain aspects of medicine or biology, particularly hard to photograph aspects. For example, these illustrations can be used to depict individual blood cells in a vein, or they can be used to create an image that distinguished the individual muscles in a muscle group. Medical illustrations are commonly used as teaching aids in medical textbooks, or as visual aids in medical journals. These illustrations might also accompany text in pamphlets or on posters, which can help a layperson better understand a complicated medical situation. Lawyers and forensics experts will also sometimes choose to use medical illustrations to help a judge or jury better grasp a certain situation, such as a gunshot wound.
Courtroom sketch art is an artistic representation of courtroom environments and trial proceedings.
a courtroom sketch artist draws courtrooms scenes during trials. In some cases, depending on the rules and regulations of a courtroom or jurisdiction, a courtroom sketch artist may need to get prior permission to do this type of work.
A courtroom sketch artist will usually arrive several minutes before the start of a trial. Thinking ahead like this can allow the artist to get the best seat possible, with a clear view of all the action. In fact, some courtrooms even have designated seats for courtroom sketch artists.
A caricature is a type of drawing, or illustration, that is cartoonish in nature. Many caricatures are drawings of people, but they can also be drawings of places or things.
Unlike regular drawings or portraits, caricatures are generally distorted somewhat. Usually, the main flaws in the subject are grossly over-exaggerated, but the subject is usually still recognizable. For instance, a caricature of a person with slightly large ears may consist of a comical drawing of the person with extremely large “Dumbo” ears.
Caricatures are often meant to be humorous, and they are often used in comic strips, particularly political cartoons. Good-spirited individuals might also consider having their caricatures drawn by a talented professional, either on the street or at a festival or other event.
Sketching is a type of drawing that is done completely freehand. It is often a technique used to create initial representations of final drawings or designs. In some cases, however, artists will create final pieces, just by sketching.
The majority of sketches are created with pencils and graphite sticks, with varying degrees of hardness. Harder graphite typically leaves lighter lines and marks, which don’t smudge well. Softer graphite, on the other hand, usually leaves darker lines, and it tends to smudge easily. This type of graphite is best for creating shading and depth in drawings. Colored pencils and charcoal, along with pastels, can also be used to create sketches. Some artists also choose to use ink pens or markers.
Sketch artists also typically use a variety of other tools as well. Quality drawing paper is essential for creating great sketches. Also, since mistakes are inevitable, the majority of sketch artists also invest in erasers as well. To prevent the final drawings from smudging, artists will also usually use special lacquer spray, which fixes the fine graphite particles in place.
Comic Book Artists
Comic books are magazines that are comprised of several comic strips. Many times, these comic strips are all related, and they tell a story. Other comic strips, on the other hand, may be comprised of several different unrelated comic strips.
The comic book has been a source of amusement and entertainment for children and adults alike since the 19th century. Some of these cartoon stories are meant to be very humorous, but the term “comic book” often brings to mind images of colorful and courageous superheroes, along with equally as ghastly super villains. Comic book artists usually need to work as freelancers, as not many companies actively hire these types of artists. In order to find work, many comic book artists need to seek out authors and publishing houses that create and publish comic books.
Many writers will spread the word that they are seeking the services of a freelance comic book artist. In order to work with a publishing house, however, comic book artists are usually encouraged to send their contact information as well as their portfolios to the publisher.
A drawing is a picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen, or crayon rather than paint, especially one drawn in monochrome.
Web developers build websites, but that just scratches the surface of what they do. Whereas the website designer creates the overall look of the website, the developer has a deep understanding of authoring or scripting languages used to create websites. This allows them to convert the different components (from audio and graphic to video and text components) into compatible web formats that are accessible to the end user. In addition to the technical aspects of web development, these professionals must possess a great understanding of user needs in order to make sure those needs are met in the best way they can be.
Because the technology is always changing and new research is showing different developments in user trends, it’s essential that web developers stay up to date and current with software programs, scripting languages and trends. With the phenomenal growth in the online world, and the increasing number of individuals and businesses utilizing websites, web developers are in high demand. Those interested in pursuing a career in this industry should have a strong background in computer science or programming. It’s also important that these professionals be well-rounded – knowledge of graphic design, multimedia publishing tools, and marketing techniques can make a web developer’s resume more attractive to potential clients or employers.
Video Game Director
Defining the role of a video game design creative director can be difficult because the exact duties of this profession can differ from one agency to the next. Like many creative professions, there is no specific set of guidelines that are followed across the board. However, all video game design creative directors generally have one broad purpose: to make sure a video game project looks fantastic in all aspects. In order to achieve this, most creative directors will manage and work with the video game designers, illustrators, motion graphic artists, 2D/3D animators and other professionals involved in the project.
Often, the video game design creative director is considered the top authority on all aspects of the visual side of a video game, and may have to devise techniques to propel a video game project forward and keep it on track while maintaining the integrity of the project. Communication is an essential skill, as is leadership and motivation. Most creative directors rise to this position after having worked as a video game designer, and they must stay up to date when it comes to the computer software programs, tools and devices used to get the job done. A creative director must be well-versed in all of the visual aspects involved in creating a video game, and a good amount of creative talent is required in this position.
A print designer is very closely related to a graphic designer, though print designers work to ensure that the print on a page is attractive and ready to print. Using technical and typographical skills, print designers ready items for print using a variety of techniques from determining font types, sizes, and colors to arranging line and letter spacing, adding graphics, and designing entire page layouts. A strong background in graphic design helps print designers determine what looks most appealing to the end user of the project.
In addition to a strong graphic design background, print designers may benefit from having experience with marketing, since many of their projects will be utilized for that purpose.
Gamer Level Designer
Motion Graphics Design
A 3D modeler is a type of multimedia artist or animator who creates three-dimensional models or visuals of items using a variety of different computer software programs and tools. This complex process is typically used to create 3D models for television, the motion picture industry, the video game industry, websites and advertising. However, these professionals may also create 3D models for scientists, architects, engineers and more. These professionals are very tech-savvy and must be very familiar with the variety of computer software programs used to build models, background scenery and other elements required for projects.
The technology and advances in the field of 3D modeling are continuously growing, so the professional that chooses this career must stay up to date and current in their field. A deep understanding of the applications and software must be combined with a natural artistic talent; a 3D modeler who has developed both his or her technical skills and artistic abilities will be most valued in this industry. This kind of work requires pulling from a diverse set of skills, so those who are most successful in this industry have a strong background in design and animation. Aspiring 3D modelers are wise to start with basic animation art and then build their expertise with modeling applications and software experience.
A game level designer is a type of game designer that works to create various levels and steps that progress through a game. These professionals often work with level editors, which are tools created by the game programmer, which assist level designers with creation of the level so that they don’t have to modify the actual game code. The game level designer must work to ensure that each level created is consistent with the other levels so the game has a uniform look and feel. Game level designers often work with other video game specialists who create visual and structural elements of a game.
Level design involves creating entire levels of game play, from map features like cities, rooms and tunnels to environmental conditions like day/night, weather and resources, specifying locations of items and entities, start and exit locations, scripted event locations that are triggered by game play, adding non-player characters, dialogue and more. Designers need a strong video game design background as well as deep knowledge of the programs and tools utilized to create game levels.
Motion graphics designers create the moving words, logos, numbers and text on the screen during a film, television show, commercial or other media project. The credits of a movie, the phone number on an infomercial, the logo of a business during a commercial – these are all examples of motion graphics.
These professionals have a strong background in graphic design and typically work as a graphic designer for some period of time before specializing in motion graphics. Knowledge of the wide range of software and computer-based design tools is needed in order to do this job successfully and to keep abreast of technological advancements in this industry.
These professionals often work in studios, where they have access to computers and tools that they use to create their designs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes data on all occupations, including graphic design. In 2012, there were approximately 259,500 graphic designers employed throughout the US, and about 24% of graphic designers were self-employed.
Motion graphics designers can work as freelancers and provide assistance to companies and organizations as-needed. However, there is always the risk of not finding steady work as a freelancer. Future motion graphics designers will be happy to know that there are many industries that hire full-time professionals to fill their need.
Like many other art professions, photography is very competitive. Armed with a degree, however, a photographer will often have a much better chance of landing good paying jobs.
Some companies only hire staff photographers with the proper training, for instance. A photographer often has the option of working at photography studios, newspapers, magazines, advertising agencies, and website design agencies.
Photographers that choose to work for themselves, however, typically have much more
. They get to pick and choose which jobs they accept. Some may prefer to shoot photographs at weddings, for instance, and others may only sell photographs to certain niche magazines.
Photography is a complex language. Whatever image it may be, it can express joy and sorrow, wonder and sympathy. Every human emotion can find a place in photography. Photography has the power to move one. Photographs can grab our attention and speak directly to our emotions. At a more subtle level, we can learn lessons about a whole range of emotions. Grief has the power to wash away the luminance and chrominance of our lives. There is no magic way to restore them at will. We have to be patient. But while waiting we can search for the shapes and patterns that are still there in the greyness. They will lead us back to colour eventually. At moments of great sorrow in my life I have used images to express that hope of returning colour.
Photography is important to learn because you use it in your everyday life and it leads to so many other careers you may be interested in. Photography leads to art, design, and entertainment. Photography allows us to communicate without speaking-much like photojournalism. What comes to mind is the saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words." Photography makes us artists. Photography allows us to express ourselves through an art form. We notice a beautiful landscape or an old man’s lined face and we want to capture it. Each of us will have a different reason to do so but, essentially, we want to create something. Photography is not only part of our legacy but also the pictures we take tell us what we enjoy most about life.
What can a person do with a photography degree?
