Maya Angelou Taylor Choate Maya Angelou -Born: April 4th, 1928
in St. Louis, MO
-Parents: Bailey and Vivian Baxter Johnson
-Her parents named her Marguerite Ann Johnson, she changed it because she it felt it was more appealing for her job as a singer Places... -She was raised in St. Louis, MO, and Stamps, AR -In San Fransisco, CA she was the first black cable car conducter. -She has also lived in Egypt, Ghana, Brooklyn, NY, Los Angelos, CA. -Maya now lives in Harlem, NY as well as Winston- Salem, North Carolina JOBS Shortly after High School she worked as a cook and waitress to support her newborn son, while being a single mother. At age 8.. Maya was raped by her mother's boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. When her uncles found out they killed him, Maya, thinking it was her fault didn't talk for five years. Thank You Writing -Maya Angelou's First autobiography was "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", this is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma -Maya wrote and read "On the Pulse of Morning" for President Bill Clinton's inauguration ceremony. Dance Maya practiced modern dance, which is a free, expressive style of dancing started in the early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet.
