Throughout the memoir
by Adeline Yen Mah, many themes are shown. One of the themes is that hard work and determination can help overcome challenges and ultimately lead to success. Adeline had been top of her class since kindergarten, working hard to achieve academic success. As Adeline stated, "that seemed to be the only way to please my father or get any attention from him whatsoever" (51).Even when Adeline was only seven, she was nicknamed "genius" because of her academic record. Adeline worked very hard because to her, it was the only way to escape her abusive parents who didn't care about her and made her feel worthless. As she stated," I was resented for simply being around"(54). At Sacred Heart, Adeline skipped two forms and was called "Scholar". She was being compared to Monica Lim, who was three years older than her. Adeline had a low self-esteem despite her intelligence. This still did not prevent her from dedicating herself to learning. In addition to this, Adeline promised Ye Ye she would work even harder when she got back to school after recuperating from pneumonia. Ye Ye inspired her to enter a playwriting competition. She worked hard, reading the rules meticulously. One day her father called her into his room. Her hard work had paid of. She won the competition. Not only that, but she had also gotten her father to allow her to study in England, ultimately overcoming her challenges and achieving her dream.
In Sword Art Online, the main character Kirito also shows that hard work and determination can help overcome challenges and ultimately lead to success. Sword Art Online is a virtual game world. In order to clear the game, 100 bosses have to be defeated. The players are trapped in the game and if they die in the game, they die in real life. Despite this, Kirito still works hard to defeat the bosses in order to clear the game and help others trapped in the game. Kirito stated, " It felt like every day that passed here stole another piece of my real life away." In addition to the internal conflict of being afraid of death, Kirito also suffers the death of his friends which he blames himself for. Another conflict Kirito has is that he is called a cheater because of his high stats which he achieved from hard work. Like Adeline, Kirito faces many conflicts that stand in the way of the his dreams. Kirito's dedication to beating the game, helped him overcome his challenges and led him to work hard toward his goal. He stated," The main reason I got stronger was so I’d be able to survive." This shows that like Adeline, who studies to escape her daily life and to gain acceptance, Kirito trained and got stronger in order to survive the game. Discovering the identity of the game master, Kirito's work pays off when he defeats him in a duel, clearing the game. In
, the main protagonist Adeline achieves her dreams of going to college in England through long hours of studying, just like Kirito is able to beat the game through long hours of training.

Like Adeline and Kirito, Steve Jobs also demonstrates the ability to overcome challenges and achieve success with determination and perseverance. Steve Jobs was born to graduate students who put him up for adaption. He was adapted and was always intelligent. However, he was a prankster. The article stated, "his fourth-grade teacher needed to bribe him to study." Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started the apple computer in 1976 when Jobs was only 21. The Apple II was successful however, the next products had huge flaws and the company began to suffer. Jobs had to face these challenges and then he was forced to resign from Apple. Like Adeline and Kirito, Jobs fought these challenges. He returned to Apple, "instigating Apple's success in the 1970s." Jobs once again faced conflicts when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. However, he fought the cancer, postponing surgery and later successfully having surgery that removed his neuroendocrine tumor. The article states," Apple products have dictated the evolution of modern technology." Because Steve Jobs had determination and perseverance, he succeeded in being the CEO of Apple, a company that revolutionized the computer industry.
