Liberian Civil War
Transcript of Liberian Civil War
It was founded by freed American slaves with the help of the
American Colonization Society, in 1822.
It was all good and fun untill the nightmare began.
On April 12, 1980, a successful military coup was staged by a group of noncommissioned army officers led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe. After a failed coup attempt, Samuel Doe punished tribes across his country, murdering and executing thousands, setting off a voilent civil war which lasted for about 30 years. THE EVENTS THEN SPIRALED DOWNWARDS INTO A MESS OF CHAOS AND CONFUSION. sAM dOE hAD PUT DOWN INTERNAL OPPOSITIONS TO HIS UNDEMOCRATIC rEGIME AND THUS STARTED A BRUTAL ciVIL WAR. Most of the combatants in this conflict were child soldiers.
The children were administered heavy drugs and alcohol leading to some
of the most brutal attrocities ever seen. As stated by a Liberian rebel general, Joshua Blahyi "so, before leading my troops into battle, we would get drunk and drugged up, sacrifice a local teenager, drink their blood, then strip down to our shoes and go into battle wearing colourful wigs and carrying dainty purses we'd looted from civilians. We'd slaughter anyone we saw, chop their heads off and use them as soccer balls. We were nude, fearless, drunk and homicidal. We killed hundreds of people — so many I lost count."
