Jimmy Mattaman: Jimmy's sister is Theresa. He is Moose's friend and has black curly hair. Jimmy wears glasses and is smart. He wants to make a "fly circus". Jimmy can be sensitive, especially about the fact that he throws like "a dead girl", according to Moose's friend, Scout.

, by Gennifer Choldenko, takes place in Alcatraz an island in the San Francisco Bay, in which America's worst criminal's once lived, such as Al Capone "Scar face", Machine Gun Kelly, and Roy Gardener. According to the book, it is uncrowded and covered with bird guano. This books received the Newbery Honor Medal in 2005.
MAIN CHARACTERS, PART 2
Matthew "Moose" Flanagan: Moose is the narrator of this book. He has straw-brown hair and has Irish in his blood. He is a tall boy and doesn't like to get in trouble; therefore he is liked by many. He is honest, caring, and a good brother.However, he is easy to convince and is often taken advantage of by Piper, even though he likes her.
Natalie Flanagan: Natalie is autistic and is Moose's sister. She is a genius at math and is unpredictable, stubborn and is friends with Theresa. Natalie, as mentioned before, is constantly trying to make it into Ester P. Marinoff, a school for the autistic. She enjoys counting her collection of shirt buttons.
Annie Bomini: Annie is Moose's friend. She has a "squarish" structure and blond hair. She is very good at baseball and she is trustworthy. She is also Piper's friend and can, too, be persistent.
Theresa Mattaman: Theresa is Natalie's friend and Jimmy's brother. She also has black curly hair. She is a young, adventurous, stubborn girl. She can be a bit of a tattle-tale at times and is quite bossy.
"Good Moose. Obedient Moose. I always do what I'm supposed to do."
Piper Williams: Piper is the warden's daughter. She has long dark hair and freckles. Piper also has full lips, and squinty eyes. She is very sly and likes to "play with fire". Piper is a daring, persistent, rich, unpredictable, and mischievous package. She often gets what she wants and cannot be trusted. Piper is a very good actor.
"Piper waves like she is the sweetest girl next door. For a second I almost believe her. That's how good she is.
" 'I guess baseball isn't the Mattaman family sport,' I [Moose] say under my breath."
Gennifer Choldenko has written a sequel,
AL CAPONE SHINES MY SHOES
. A third in the series is on its way.

Summary: After Moose Flanagan moves to Alcatraz Island so that his sister, Natalie, can try out for a well-known school for the autistic, he makes new friends, as well as hardships. Natalie is quickly rejected from the school. Each time the family tries, she is rejected again and again. Moose does something extreme to try to get her in.
After suffering brain damage, Al Capone's "brain storage" was the same as a
Alphonse "Al" Capone "Scarface" is one of the most notorious villains of all history. He wasn't a very tall man, at 5 10", yet he had a staggering amount of power. Famous for the Valentine Massacre, this man has one of the most vile hearts in the world, yet a fellow Alcatraz convict reported Capone having "outside of losing his head so easily and bragging
what he had done,
has a heart as big as a house.
Gennifer Choldenko's sister, Gina
Johnson, also had autism, like
Natalie. In order to research about Alcatraz, Choldenko volunteered to help out at the place. Choldenko said in an interview that the island reminded her of Gina. This caused her to add an autistic child into the book, hence Natalie.
