Civil engineers jobs vary from building bridges to roads and reservoirs. The jobs requires plenty of analysis with the planning stage, survey reports and maps, and the cost of the construction. Civil engineers can also work for a state or local government.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of civil engineers are the planning, designing, construction, maintaining, and operating infrastructures while protecting the public and environmental health, as well as improving existing infrastructures that have been neglected. There are different branches of civil engineers that focus on certain specializations such as construction, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering. With different specializations come different duties and responsibilities but for the most part they are to plan, design, construct, maintain, and operate infrastructures.
In most countries a civil engineer would need to graduate from a post-secondary with a degree in civil engineering, which requires a strong background in mathematics and the physical sciences. That being said an individual
working in the field of civil engineering would need
to have skills in mathematics and physical sciences.
Now more than before civil engineers work more on
computers rather than being “on site” so it would be
helpful for a person in this field to have skills with
computers and computer design.
Mandatory Skills
Training & Education
Depending on where you are located the prerequisites for a civil engineering job will vary but for the most part a person would need to possess an academic degree with a major in civil engineering. The length of study for such a degree is usually three to five years and the completed degree is usually designated as a Bachelor of Engineering, though some universities designate the degree as a

Bachelor of Science. The degree generally includes units covering physics, mathematics, project management, design and specific topics in civil engineering. In North America people are also required to obtain several years of engineering experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer, and pass the fundamentals of engineering exam to acquire a license to practice as a Professional Engineer or PE.

The high school courses that are required and/or recommended are:

Academic Chemistry or higher; Grade 11 & 12

Academic Physics or higher; Grade 11 & 12

Academic English or higher; Grade 11 & 12

Calculus and Vectors; Grade 12

One additional U or M Course
There is plenty of growth and promotion in this field, you can start your own business, get promoted in your job. You are also able to get your Professional Engineering License. It tells employers around everywhere that you're committed to engineering excellence; that you have the proper skills, education, mindset and attitude, also that you're a responsible professional with the proven problem solving abilities to help their business build business.
The mean salary for Civil Engineers with a bachelor’s degree is about $77,560/year. In an
hourly salary, that would work out to around $37.29/hour. This mean salary comes from
the civil engineers who start from the ground up (first starting out), and make
around $48,000/year and those who are at the top of the field (10+ years of experience),
who make around $115,000/year.

Civil engineers are important to economic growth. In Canada, the need for skilled engineers is high. According to Statistics Canada, 2013 was the first year that the ‘excess supply’ of civil engineers in Canada reached zero. This means that, the profession has full employment. With constant population growth and the constant need for new structures and management, the future of civil engineering seems to be strong. According to the Department of Labor, civil engineering jobs are expected to increase at a rate of 19% through the year 2020.

As time goes on there will be a need for more innovation in the civil engineering field. With today’s prominence on having a “greener footprint”, it creates great opportunities for civil engineers to come up with more innovative designs

Civil engineers are positive influences in our world because their job is design and construction. They’re responsible for building roads, bridges, canals, dams, and
buildings. Civil engineering is connected to environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geophysics, geodesy, control engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, atmospheric engineering, forensic engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, offshore engineering, quantity surveying, coastal engineering, and construction engineering. Civil engineers work in the public sector and in a private sector with homeowners.
“To create things, to actually see them being built… it’s very rewarding to see the results of what you saw on paper. It gives you a lot of personal satisfaction.” says Andrew Hermann, president of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a bridge engineer himself. The Bureau of Labour Statistics projects 19.4 percent employment growth for civil engineers between 2010 and 2020. During that time period, about 51 100 jobs will be filled. Civil Engineering is claimed as number 26 on the list of best jobs and has a rated overall score of 6.9 out of 10 by money careers.
Civil engineers made a median salary of $77 990 in 2011. The highest paid was $119 620 and the lowest was $50 370. Entry level jobs require a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Technical projects and management responsibility often require a master’s degree, and teaching requires a Ph.D. Civil engineers have the ability to be creative in their work. They need to know the in’s and outs of building construction, including electrical and plumbing systems and functional workings. Civil engineers play a big role in community development. Without their talents and skills communities wouldn’t be able to grow. They also help in the safety of people by developing sewer systems with the sewer process.
