Unit 2 - Leadership and teamwork in the public services
Groups of four. Each group needs paper and pens. Draw a grid on which they write their forenames. For example,




Each team has three minutes to write down as many words (three letters or more) that they can make only using the letters in their names. Letters must adjoin each other in the grid, but do not have to be in a straight line.
When the time is up each team adds up their score.
3 or 4 letter words = 1 point
5 letter word = 2 points
6 letter word = 3 points

The aim of this unit is to develop a knowledge of leadership style and an understanding
of teams and teamwork activities within the public services.
Gain the skills needed to communicate with, and lead, teams.

Give YOUR definition of Leadership

Leadership is the art of leading others to deliberately create a result that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.”

1. Talk about what happened: Was it easy to reach the goal? What things hindered you fromreaching the goal?
What did you do that helped you reach the goal?
2. Talk about the goal: Was it a worthwhile goal? Even though you didn’t decide on the goal, you were willing to work toward it. Have you ever had to work for a goal that you didn’t choose? What’s it like to work for a goal that you don’t feel is worthwhile? What’s it like towork toward a goal in which there isn’t an immediate “reward,” or one which takes a long
time to accomplish?
3. Talk about goal setting in your group. Does our group have specific goals? Does everyone inthe group know what they are? What do we do if people don’t “buy in?”
