Water Hydrogen Surface Tension Heat Capacity Aqueous Solution Polarity Solute Solubility The End Solid phase - the molecules are closely bound to one another by molecular forces. A solid holds its shape and the volume of a solid is fixed by the shape of the solid. Liquid phase - the molecular forces are weaker than in a solid. A liquid will take the shape of its container with a free surface in a gravitational field. In microgravity, a liquid forms a ball inside a free surface. Regardless of gravity, a liquid has a fixed volume. Gas phase - the molecular forces are very weak. A gas fills its container, taking both the shape and the volume of the container. A solute is dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent. The solvent does the dissolving. What is a Solute?
A solute is a solid, liquid, or gas that is dissolved into another substance, known as a solvent. The solvent does the dissolving. Adhesion is the tendency of dissimilar particles and/or surfaces to cling to one another. Cohesion allows water to transport to the tip of the leaves. Surface tension prevents the paper clip from submerging. A measureable physical quantity that characterizes the amount of heat required to change a body's temperature by a given amount. <Calorimeters Water Meters> Any kind of solution in which water is the solvent
Ex: Cola, Rain, Saltwater ^Rain Salt Water> <Cola a hydrogen bond forms when the oxygen of one water molecule is electrically attached to a nearby molecule such as hydrogen. the ability of a substance to dissolve; the quality of being soluble Solubility of gas in water Solubility of Aluminum in water Solubility of tablets in water Together the three are called Intermolecular forces which are the forces of attractions that exist between molecules in a compound. The solubility of a substance fundamentally depends on the used solvent as well as on temperature and pressure. When something is soluble it means that it dissolves in water. Things like Kool Aid, salt and sugar. But water is a universal solvent. Facts of speeding up solubility.. 1) the polarity of the substance and the polarity of the solvent (like dissolves like).

2) the temperature of the solvent (for solids, the higher the temperature of the solvent, the higher the solubility -- sugar in hot tea dissolves more easily than in iced tea -- but often for gases, the solubility goes down at higher temperature -- and why soda goes flat when its warm).

3) Pressure also effects solubility. Notice CO2 will form bubbles when you open the cap of a soda can.
