Plymouth and Its Problems In the first winter, nearly half of the pilgrims struggling to build the Plymouth settlement died from cold and sickness. The first winter, the colonists did not have enough time to plant crops and obtain food. In the Plymouth area, their were a few very hostile Native American indian groups. The Pilgrims had no earthly idea of what kind of crops would thrive in their living area. The Pilgrims had a lack of financial support from backers of the colony in England. ? Although all of these were large problems that affected the colony of Plymouth, it still thrived.
