What is Crossing the Midline?
Capable of crossing the sagittal plane.
Developmentally appropriate (6 months)
Goal for Music Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists.
Populations who need this intervention:
Children on the Autism Spectrum
Developmental Disabilities
What's the Big Deal?
Developmentally appropriate
An indicator of Bilateral Integration
An indicator of cognitive skills
An indicator of lateralization
What happens if I can't Cross the Midline?
Directly affects the ability to read.
Directly affects the ability to write.
Directly affects the ability to function.
Bilaterally symmetric nervous system.
Integration of left/right brain mediated by nerve fibers.
Some neurons and axons do not project across the midline.
Non-musical Activities to help Cross the Midline:
Cutting, pasting, folding paper.
Playing Twister
Simon Says
Streamers/scarves (movement activity)
Musical Activities for Crossing the Midline:
Playing pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments.
Movement activities that utilize both sides of the body--locomotor and nonlocomotor.
Keeping the steady beat in a variety of different ways, i.e. walking, tip-toeing, skipping, galloping, ect.
Developing rhythmic patterns and body percussion patterns as accompaniment figures.
Singing songs, such as the "Right-Left" Song to teach bilateral coordination (see video for demonstration).
